Default [O/T] Irfanview setup

I'm a long time user of this great graphics tool, and have been using
v3.97 since its release. When I was recently forced to nuke this
sytem and reinstall 98SE and assorted apps, I checked for the latest
version and downloaded v4.25.

With the way I had 3.97 configured, it would open an image file at:

100% if that would fit the window;
at some lesser % if not.

The offered % scale steps were always in 10% increments/decrements
i.e. 10/20/30/40/50/60/70/80/90/10/110% etc.

With v4.25 I am unable to get this selection - from
Options-Properties/Settings-Viewing I can get 10% steps that either:

(a) are RELATIVE 10% steps (which can for example give me 87/96/105%);

(b) ABSOLUTE 10% steps (87/97/107% etc);

(c) FIXED VALUES which do at least give me a 100% scale, but the other
steps appear almost logarithmic.

Is it even possible to get v3 scaling behaviour in v4?

If you mean within the IrfanView window, the F key will toggle between
100% and full size (think F for full). IV will remember this setting.
(These days of multi-megapixel images, the 100% option will usually just
give you a tiny part of the sky in the top left corner.) I _think_ you
can choose whether the window size changes - if I'm right, it's one of
the many settings under Options, Preferences.

If you mean full screen, i. e. with no other windows or the IV controls
visible (toggle with the return key between this and windowed), it now
has 6 modes: 100%, fit to screen, fit to width, fit to height, fit
(large images only), and I forget the sixth one. When in full screen
mode, the F key will again cycle you round these 6; for any one given
image, several of the 6 will look the same, of course. It remembers
which you leave it at for the remainder of the full screen session, i.
e. while you space between images, but not when you come out of it, with
Escape or enter; which of the 6 modes it _starts_ a full screen session
in is again set under options, Preferences - see the Full Screen tab.

The offered % scale steps were always in 10% increments/decrements
i.e. 10/20/30/40/50/60/70/80/90/10/110% etc.

(b) ABSOLUTE 10% steps (87/97/107% etc);

If you've got into a set of steps that don't include 100%, pressing F
once or twice will always get you 100%. (Look in the title bar - if
you're not using full-screen; if it _doesn't_ show you a percentage,
it's 100%.)

(c) FIXED VALUES which do at least give me a 100% scale, but the other
steps appear almost logarithmic.

I think relative steps _will_ be logarithmic.

Have you noticed that it now zooms about the centre of the image (unless
you're against one edge/corner), rather than always from one corner, as
used to be the case?

Is it even possible to get v3 scaling behaviour in v4?

I think so.

(I think I've been using since 2.x. Improvements every time [well, one
iteration did remove support for one obscure proprietary format, at
someone's request], and yet it has still remained small and fast [and
with lots of easy keyboard shortcuts] - I think it might even still fit
on a floppy, remember those?, though not the plugins.)

I think there was a change in the scaling processs a few versions back,
but I don't remember the details now.

Try reading the forum or FAQs at http://www.irfanview.com/. There may be
something there.

I'm sure it's covered in "help"

but it might be easier to just reinstall you version you are already
familiar with

Default Irfanview setup

I had v3.36, very happy with it

then the new whizbang v4.25

I have both installed, so I can pick whichever's features I want that
day

Noticeably, 4.25 is SLOWER than 3.25, more than 3 to 1

Very, very irksome
