program to edit any (inactive) Windows registry file?
I had Windohs 95 installed on an old PC, but a hard disk crash
took out a load of programs. I can no longer boot from this hard disk, but have a backup on DVD, including the Windows registry. Now I would like to extract some registry keys (such as program registrations and passwords). Is there a program like regedit, which will open any Win9x registry file, other than the active system.dat and user.dat? |

program to edit any (inactive) Windows registry file?
On Tue, 19 Jun 2007 20:42:48 -0700, put finger to
keyboard and composed: I had Windohs 95 installed on an old PC, but a hard disk crash took out a load of programs. I can no longer boot from this hard disk, but have a backup on DVD, including the Windows registry. Now I would like to extract some registry keys (such as program registrations and passwords). Is there a program like regedit, which will open any Win9x registry file, other than the active system.dat and user.dat? Use regedit in DOS mode: Using Registry Editor in Real Mode http://support.microsoft.com/kb/131352 Assuming your Win95 registry is in the d:\windows directory, then the following commands will export the relevant files to two text files in your TEMP directory. regedit /l:d:\windows\user.dat /e c:\windows\temp\user.txt regedit /l:d:\windows\system.dat /e c:\windows\temp\system.txt The above assumes that your CD-ROM driver is loaded by config.sys, and that autoexec.bat contains mscdex.exe. This will be the case if you boot from a startup diskette. Alternatively, you could copy the files to your C: drive in GUI mode and then run regedit in DOS mode. - Franc Zabkar -- Please remove one 'i' from my address when replying by email. |

Boot in Command Prompt (it does not work in DOS window when you are in
Windows), and type: regedit /? You'll see the options, that will allow you to work (in Command Prompt only, too) with the Registry files other than the active system.dat and user.dat. -- Mikhail Zhilin http://www.aha.ru/~mwz Sorry, no technical support by e-mail. In addition to the methods mentioned in this thread, there is a shareware utility to
do this, named Regdat v.1.3: http://freenet-homepage.de/h.ulbrich/ http://www.winsite.com/bin/Info?500000023756 You can download it for the trial period, which may be as long as you need to use it. -- Glen Ventura, MS MVP Shell/User, A+ http://dts-l.org/ http://dts-l.org/goodpost.htm wrote in message ups.com...
