Default Save As... not saving correctly

I was helping my parents resolve an issue downloading
files when I noticed someting odd. When trying to save a
file which was, technically, a text file, when the Save As.
.. . dialogue box comes up I would select the Type as All
Files but the file would be saved with the .txt extension
anyway.

This file is used by ham radio operators to update
satellite information. The actual name of the file is
amsat.all and while it is a text file the program which
automatically reads this information will not read it if
the .txt extension is in place.

This has only occured since I ran multiple updates to bring
their system up to date. The other interesting item is
that when the file is saved the name is amsat.all..txt
Note the two extra . before txt.

The file can be renamed to amsat.all by the usual methods
but it seems as if the dialogue box is not recognizing the
command to save the file as it is named (All Files) and
insists on saving it as a text file (the default selection).

Suggestions?

Windows 98 doesn't recognise the .all extension so it saves
it as a .txt file.

Try associating the file with an application program, such
as MS Word, and see if it can open and save the file with
that extension.

Correct. That is exactly what it is doing.

However, before I updated their machine (patches and such)
it was saving the file correctly. The .all extension is
what the file needs to have as its name for the program to
read the information.

Something just came to mind. If I turn off being able to
see file extensions in a folder maybe that will allow the
file to be saved as it is. I don't remember if being able
to see the extensions was on previously when the file was
saving correctly.

temporary work-around enclose filename in quotes "amsat.all" will exclude the
..txt extension
