Default Recognizing an External Hard drive in Win98 SE

I have a dual boot system, and am using both Win98 SE and Windows
2000, both of which are installed on my first hard drive. This has
worked well for me for several years, and I have no trouble reading
many USB devices with either OS. But I have had a USB 2.0 Western
Digital external hard drive for a couple of years, that is only
recognizable under Win 2000. Just recently I bought another external
hard drive, this one is by Seagate and naturally it is USB 2.0. It
also seems to not be recognizable by Win98 SE, yet is by Win 2000.
The odd thing here is this mother board has several USB 2.0 ports on
it, and both these drives are plugged into these ports. So - logic
tells me it cannot be the mother board, but MUST be the OS and/or the
lack of correct drivers for the Win 98 SE, but I've been unable to
locate the needed drivers for either hard drive.

But to give more information on this particular computer, which was an
upgrage that I assembled in January of this year, using a Biostar
P4M80-M4 motherboard and an Intel Celeron 2.66 MHz cpu. It has a VIA
chipset and a VIA VT 82CX86 USB Controller, Vers. 1.00 with speed of
48 MHz, on this motherboard. I was provided with a CD with this
motherboard, and let both OS's collect what they felt needed from it,
when setting it up.

I've read dozens and dozens of posts on this particular subject in
this and other NGs, but still do not have any idea what drivers are
missing or perhaps just need updating. Can anyone help me here?
Thanks in advance.

If the drive is NTFS, then win98 cannot recognize the file system

Hate to sound nasty, but NTFS has/had nothing to do with it. It was &
still is a driver problem.]

Fortunately, I was able to find a set of drivers for the 2 year old
Western Digital USB drive, and it now works under Win98SE. However,
after hours of searching and downloading drivers from Seagate, it
seems they have locked the door on this. So, I say to hell with
Seagate's Free Agent drives. But they got my money, and I've got a
drive that "even after reformatting" is unusable in Win98SE, even
though it works just fine in Windows 2000.

Thanks for nothing.
