Default Problem with this website -- anyone figure out WHY??

Every time I go to this website http://www.jo-ann.com and float my
cursor over the horizontal visual menu near the top, it freezes my
computer -- no clicking, just floating.

Anyone got any idea why??

Is it Java?? Is it my mouse?? Maybe video driver??

This is not the only time this happens -- it happens A LOT. But, this
is the only time I've been able to replicate exactly what is causing
my computer to freeze up.

I've reformatted and reinstalled the operating system 3 times in the
last two and half months because of this behaviour. The freezing
actually will get me to the point where my operating system gets
corrupted.

I run RegCleanExpert, AdAware and SpyBot every week. I don't have a
virus checker installed. But, I run Symantec every week.

Any ideas would be appreciated. I'm tired of cold-booting. I can't
upgrade right now. Thanks.

I just changed from Sun Java to Microsoft Java ... no joy ... same
behaviour.

Well, so far, I've tried this from computing.net:

Quote:
8. ME instals a compiled VXD driver called VMM32.VXD which can cause
crashes and hangs and sometimes gives a message mentioning VMM. It is
supposed to be a compilation of drivers appropriate to your particular
PC but sometimes does not work properly. It is replacing other drivers
available in ME which can be installed individually into the System
folder. The relevant devices will then choose the single driver
instead of the compiled one by preference. So, go to C:\Windows\Options
\Cabs (or C:\Windows\Options\Instal on some PCs), find Win 20 which
looks like a Zip file (it?s an installation Cab), use an Unzip program
to look inside and find these 8 drivers, for example ? vcomm.vxd,
vdd.vxd, vflatd.vxd, vdmad.vxd, vmouse.vxd, configmg.vxd, ntkern.vxd,
and ios.vxd Extract these files to the C:\Windows\System directory and
reboot. These changes can, in certain circumstances, solve a lot of
hanging, crashing, startup and shutdown problems in ME. It is
important not to download any other copies of these drivers from
websites because they may not be the correct versions for your
installation. If this was not your problem, it is perfectly safe to
remove these drivers again.
I've been able to use that site that I mentioned and I haven't frozen
up in over a half hour which is a major miracle. Still got my fingers
crossed.

IMO a rather ignorant and misguided statement from someone who appears to
know little about the subject on which they talk. You could safely
disregard most that this person is saying. Whilst little they say is
wrong the changes they propose will do nothing and certainly nothing
whatsoever for the problem you are encountering when visiting certain web
sites. However, since it is your PC, you can do whatever you want with
it. Making these changes will not be the reason why you are now able to
access a particular web site.

Incidentally the extracted drivers mentioned in the post are better placed
in the C:\Windows\system\vmm32 folder if they are going to be used to
replace those built into vmm32.vxd, which incidentally are the same
drivers other than for ifsmgr.vxd and perhaps vmouse.vxd where Microsoft
released updated versions of these two files after the release of Win Me.
All you are doing by having 30 plus separate drivers rather than the
single composite vmm32.vxd is slow down your PC. Again your choice but
from your posts you clearly like to fiddle (and why not) so you might as
well learn from the exercise.

Well, Michael, as insightful as your comments may be, they aren't
really helpful.

I reinstalled my operating system again because I have been locking up
incessantly. It's either re-format or open the door and aim for the
pond

I haven't finished reinstalling yet. Gotta add back my docs and
images and software. It's not freezing anymore. EXCEPT on that damn
website. What is it about the horizontal strip menu that is so
different that it locks me up if I go anywhere near it?? I don't have
to click anything. Just float my cursor anywhere over it and it locks
up.

Thanks.

The menu that you stated that freezes the system is a JavaServerPage
[.jsp] I doubt that the native MS JVM included with Win ME is capable of
running it properly.

Try he Download the Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 5.0 Update 14:
http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index_jdk5.jsp
Save it, close the browser and any other open programs and then install it.

Supported System Configurations
Windows ME
http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.5.0/syste...gurations.html

Please be aware that the Autoupdater will eventually notify you of any
security updates for it but will NOT uninstall older, vulnerable
versions. You must do that, after installing the latest version, via
Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel.

Thanks, MowGreen.

Before I re-installed the operating system, I had already been using
the latest and greatest from Java. I was still having that problem.

I have FINALLY figured out what is causing my computer to freeze
whenever my cursor moves over the horizontal strip menu:

SOLUTION:
-----------------

* I have AdShield as my only pop-up blocker. There are a few settings
that you can turn off/on at will. One of these -- BLOCK SCRIPTED POP
UPS -- when disabled allows me to skate all over that website AND the
horizontal strip menu without freezing up.

Thanks for your help, MowGreen. The only reason that this solution
came to mind is there is ONE website that I've been dealing with for
the past two months that HAS TO have AdShield disabled in order to
function. I usually turn off all four settings when I access the
site. It dawned on me that the Jo-Ann website was probably the same
or a similar problem.

HUGE SIGH OF RELIEF!! I've been wanting to place an order. FINALLY!!

Oh, I am, by the way, using the Java that comes with Windows ME with
no problems so far.
