Default IE 6.0

Trying to "update" to IE v6.0 on my Dell Dim 4100 with OEM Me. Had to
re-install Me from OEM disks that contain IE 5.50.4134.0100. Have tried to
use the Windows Update from the MS site which recognizes that the machine is
running an older version of IE and wanted to upgrade to Microsoft Internet
Explorer 6 Service Pack 1 but can't seem to get this v6.0 to install. V6.0
is required for a lot of other programs to work (music downloads) How can I
get this version to load?

Did you have V6 on the machine before you did the re-install ?
If so you may have what is known as version soup, have a look at the
following site to see if anything there helps.

Thanks I will try these sites. I did have IE 6.0 at one point but lost it on
the re-install.
I'll look at these. Thanks again.

Was the reinstall "clean" or over the existing system? If the latter,
which would mean for example that you retained your installed programs and
data such as e-mail, then this would have caused the version hell
mentioned by Joan (to avoid this you would have needed to have uninstalled
IE6 before the Win Me reinstall) in which case you might have to uninstall
and then reinstall IE using the instructions on Noel Paton's site to which
Mart referred you.

However before doing that you might want to try the following:
Using Windows Explorer first set it so you can view hidden system files
and folders (Tools | Folder Options | View and check "Show hidden files
and folders" and UNcheck "Hide protected operating system files" and
Apply).

Create a new folder "C:\Program Files\Internet Backup"

Locate the folder "C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\Uninstall
Information". Move the contents of this folder to the folder "C:\Program
Files\Internet Backup" created above.

Now try installing IE6, re-selecting all components that you want using
the Advanced option, even those already bolded, and see if this works. If
this works you can now safely delete the folder "C:\Program Files\Internet
Backup" and its contents. If not, copy the files back to the "C:\Program
Files\Internet Explorer\Uninstall Information" folder and delete the
"C:\Program Files\Internet Backup" folder.
