Default Help with paint error

My computer was running perfectly yesterday, a newly installed windows ME
upgrade from win 98, back in August. For some stupid reason, I thought I
should run a thourough scandisk just cause I never had before since ME was
installed. I did this in safe mode. It had no errors to report. Only now when
I try to open ANY .bmp file I get an error actually 2 error windows.
:C:\My.bmp was not found is the first error (no I don't have or have ever had
a file of that name) Underneath that error is another error wich says the,
actual real file name and file path of the file, I am trying to open. I can
see the thumbnail and open the file yet the error says: windows cannot find
(filename and path) you may have typed the name incorrectly or another open
program cannot find a system file then it says I should search.
How can I correct this error. Hopefully without having to reinstall windows.

Default Help with paint error

The 'My.bmp' error is caused by a missing punctuation in the registry

This should be fairly easily corrected... once we know what program you are
using to open BMP files

lets check the basic defaults first....
Open Windows Explorer
Click on Tools|Folder Options
click on the File Types tab
find the BMP entry, and highlight it, then click on Advanced

highlight 'open' and click on Edit

the 'Application used....' should read
rundll32.exe C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\SHIMGVW.DLL,ImageView_Fullscreen

'use DDE' should be checked
DDE Message should read
[open(%1)]

'Application'
ShellImageView

'DDE Application Not Running'
(this is blank)
