I upgraded to SE so that we could use an MP3 player that
requires SE.

Ever since, we have had problems with the computer running
slow, locking up, and on occasion just going black.

Would running scandisk or defrag improve this? Is this
something that anyone else has run into? Any fix
recommended? Thanks.

Doing what you propose won't hurt a thing and may help. I'd also look at
this:

Spyware/scumware/adware are causing numerous system problems. I recommend
you download and use the following programs and consider removing everything
these programs identify. Be aware that there are frequent updates to these
programs and you need to check for them before every use.

AdAwa http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/

CWShredder: http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/cwschronicles.html (download
link near the bottom)

Spybot: http://www.safer-networking.org/

Thanks. I already have AdAware and Spybot, recently
obtained, and will run them and also download and run the
CWShredder.

Make sure you do the updates on the two you have as they add to the
definitions nearly weekly. This crap is a big problem.
