Try using a virtual pc. It should work fine then..

Hmmmm. Hard to reply to this. You can boot the OS from almost any
device that the BIOS supports. Where the Operating System resides is
another matter.

of mine if I can figure it out. I have some old MS-DOS based programs
I would like to still run, however I cannot get them to work in XP
pro. Instead of using an older PC and having to have 2 computers I
was wondering if anyone knows how it might be possible to install
windows 95, 98, or 98SE on to a CF card. My first and main problem is
finding a way to format the CF so it is bootable. I assume that worst
comes to worse I can install the version of windows on my HD on a
pre-setup partition and then transfer the files (hidden included) to
the CF. BUT I can't seem to format the CF as a bootable drive (with
MS-Dos of the correct version) The CF is more than large enough for
win 98 and the programs I need on it. I won't need networking, just
video display, usb support, sound support (onboard) and I guess it
will need to support my built in card reader? all drivers that I
should be able to get from my manufacturer before hand.

secondly, would it be easier to run straight up MS-DOS without
windows?

any help would be appreciated. I have some technical experience
dating back to x386 machines, just curious. or would it be simpler to
just use an older PC?

Hmmmm. Is that Virtual PC a RAM resident thing? I kind of doubt that
DOS can communicate with flash devices, either to write to or call upon
and execute "unloaded" commands.
