Default Audio problem

I've noticed many posts on here about people having no sound. I'm hoping I
can be a little more specific in the description of my problem, because the
solutions I saw listed did not help me.

I bought a computer with absolutely nothing on it. I installed Win98se and
realized I needed the drivers for my sound card (I went to the Device
Manager and it read "Realtek AC'97, hardware version 002"). I downloaded
them directly from the Realtek site and installed them, but the installation
stopped right at the end and gave me an error message. I rebooted and got a
blue error screen a few times before finally starting up completely. I
connected, and went to the Device Manager. From there, I had it search
online for driver updates. It found one and everything worked fine.

After letting my computer-illiterate father surf around a bit, all the sound
went kaput again (apparently he downloaded something and doesn't even know
what it was). I tried over and over and over again to redo what I did the
first time, but it just didn't work.

I restored the computer. Now, when I go to Device Manager, it doesn't even
list the sound card like before...all it says is PCI Multimedia.

I'm tearing out my hair here! This is driving me nuts! I am terrified to
download the Realtek drivers again, in case the darn thing blows up at
me...lol

Please Help!!!!
Thank you in advance,
C Beaulieu

You shouldn't have to download the drivers again - just use the copy you
downloaded last time. Boot to safe mode and remove all the audio drivers
before re-installing.

Depending on how many days back it happened you could try
startshutdownrestart in ms dos mode. Then type scanreg /restore
This will bring up the last five good registry backups.Pick one if
possible the day before evrything went haywire. It should restore all the
sound settings.Also check
Whats showing in startsettingscontrol panelmultimediaaudio and
devices.
