Default Monitor problems

My monitor screen display normally runs on high colour and
800 by 600 screen size. However it has now decided that
it wants to look like its in safe mode with 16 colours and
480 by 600 screen size. I have tried to change the
display using display properties as usual but if I restart
the computer as it says to allow the changes to take
effect, its still the same. Ive tried changing the driver
that the computer uses-the monitor manufacturer is Scott
which is not listed on the manufacturer list so I chose
one of the standard monitor types-Super VGA 800 by 600.
This still hasnt corrected the problem
