Default Microsoft Photo Editor cannot open JPG or save to JPG

Hello,

I've got a Win98SE and Microsoft Office 97. Since a while ago, I cannot use
Microsoft Photo Editor to open jpg pictures or save to jpg. I remember it's
after some scandisk action and the scandisk has set some part of my disk to
be bad sectors.

What can I do to enable Microsoft Photo Editor to open and save jpg again?

Thanks.

Herbert

Replace the failing hard drive with a new one, clone the old drive to the new drive,
then remove and reinstall Photo Editor using setup on your Office 97 disc.

Let us the .log of that run. It'll be at or near the bottom of... C:\Scandisk.log.

I might want to consider a different photo program--here's a good one and
its free:

Irfanview: A very good freeware graphics viewer: http://www.irfanview.com/

Many do recommend Irfanview.

Does everything about Microsoft Photo Editor work? I don't have it.
http://search.support.microsoft.com/...dv=1&spid=1139 MSKB
Search "photo editor"; Windows 98; This Product First; Full Text; All Words; Any Time; does come up with two page full. But I didn't see much, except maybe...

• Cannot Save Images in Windows XP As JPG
(324761) - After you upgrade from Microsoft Windows 98 to Windows XP, you may not be able to save images from a Web site through America Online (AOL).
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/324761/en-us

Is there anything in Photo Editor's menus about file types or ..jpg/.jpeg?

jpg/jpeg does not come up in the file type. Only gif, png and so forth. So
it seems there's something wrong with the filter.

I'm also using Irfanview. Just wondering if I could repair the situation
with photo editor.

What happens exactly when you *try* to open a JPG file with Photo Editor?

I've let scandisk mark certain part of the harddisk to be bad sectors
already.
