Given the age of it, finding a PCMCIA Ethernet card, either wired or
wireless that has compatible drivers for Windows 98 First Edition is
difficult. Could somebody please give me some suggestions on where and
what to get for both wired and wireless Ethernet? I don't have a
wireless connection at home, but I might need it elsewhere for
internet access.

For wired, fast ethernet is sufficient, since I only have a fast
Ethernet switch. Heck, I've only got one device at home that supports
gigabit Ethernet.

*Hmm, no NIC connection on the back,, okay, how about USB?

*USB network adapters are relatively cheap and come as 10/100 at least,
and of course wireless if that's were your headed.

Not an endorsement, nor have I used these, but:

It has 2 USB ports, I can't find any mention of USB 2.0 or 1.1 in the
manual, but given the age, I assume USB 1.1. 12mbp is plenty
considering the size of the hard drive.

USB?

PC Card/PCMCIA
check those links previously provided and
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q...XD&btnG=Search

IIRC, USR had a 11Mbps PC Card [Type II or III] that worked and came
with software for 95-NT/XP. I seem to remember some issues vaguely.

Forget Win2K with the processor and memory you have [unless you like
waiting].

DSClient

IIRC semi-reliable USB only came after a few updates.
Might be found in this if you can find it:
wucustomerservicepack1_98Gold.exe
otherwise you may need SE if you have problems. SE will or should run
fairly well on what you have, just don't try to run to much at one time.
Don't forget the firewall and other protections.

It will run win-2k really badly with that.

I only have the OEM version (win98-fe)

So go and download a 98se disk from a torrent. You know how to do that
- don't you?

The 98se torrents include a text file containing dozens of product
keys. Office 2K might even be on torrent.

Who's computer are you using to post these messages? Looks like you're
using Vista. Use that computer to download a 98se cd from a torrent.

Correction: thanks to Glen over on win98.gen_discussion for correcting
me there..

MEB and Glen
Microsoft supplied a file called:
wucustomerservicepack1_98Gold.exe
which brought a few special updates previously offered together.
In the setup, USB 2.0 basics were supplied
snip

SP1 for Win98FE is mentioned he
http://www.mdgx.com/web.htm#981
The file name is wucsp.exe

The download, for now, is he

http://download.microsoft.com/downlo...349e/wucsp.exe

Additionally, the file is also available on the Windows Security Updates
CD 2004 [which contains quite a few FE updates] as:
\Content\Win9X\Win98\Updates\wucsp.exe

Relevant section in the INF a
update.inf

[Copy.system32.drv]
usbd.sys,,,32
openhci.sys,,,32
uhcd.sys,,,32
usbhub.sys,,,32
hidclass.sys,,,32

[Strings]
;Localizable strings
LangTypeValue = 1033 ; 0x409
UPDATE_SHORT_TITLE = "Service Pack"
UPDATE_TITLE = "Windows 98 Service Pack 1"
SubVersionString = " "
LANG = "EN"
MSInfo = "MSInfo"

KEY_UPDATE = "System\CurrentControlSet\Services\UPDATE"

Not a device specific driver of course, but certainly 2.0 support if
available via device and motherboard. Any NIC may/will still require a
special INF for the specific device, though the update *may* avoid the
complaint for lack of USB 2.0, or unsupported system, in WinFE/Gold
[note the version] and even with USB 1.1 [though the speeds will not
increase due to hardware/BIOS/chipset support limitations].
