My ESS modem reports that the port is busy. How can I find out why? I
formatted the hard drive on my Winbook laptop and started to do a
clean install of win 98SE. I have a combination M2EM PCI (Maestro)
sound card / modem made by ESS. I followed the Winbook's instructions
to get the sound card and modem installed correctly. The sound card
seems to work correctly but when I try to dial out with the modem
using the dialer in the start menu under accessories – communications
I get the message “another program is using the selected telephone
device. But as far as I know that is not the case.
I then installed AOL and when I try to go out to get my local access
numbers it reports that the communications port is invalid or busy.
The modem model is ESS ES56CVH-PI Data Fax Voice Modem.
In the device manager of the system control panel under the modem
listing it says that the device is working properly.
Also In the device manager however under the Ports (COMM & LPT) there
is only the communication port COMM1 and the printer port LTP listed.
Should I also see a COMM2 listing?
In the modem control panel under that modems sub listing under the
General Tab shows COMM2 which is what the documentation from ESS and
Windbook says the modem should use. And if I go to the diagnostic tab
and select it and try to get more info I get the message couldn’t open
port then I get the more info box that has port info as:
Port COMM2
Interrupt 5
Address 2F8
UART is grayed out
Highest speed shows no response
How can I find out why the port shows invalid or busy?

Ben I did you read my question I said I do not have a COMM2 listing in
my device manager. I went to the modem listing in device manager where
I got the resources information and tried to change the interrupt from
5 to 3. I got the message This resource setting cannot be modified.

my device manager. I went to the modem listing in device manager where
I got the resources information and tried to change the interrupt from
5 to 3. I got the message This resource setting cannot be modified.

Well I have been trying to track down where I thought I read that an
infrared port is a lot of times assigned to COMM2 port. My laptop
indeed has an infrared port although I have never used it. I am not
even sure I own a printer that also has one. Anyway I went into device
manager and under network adapters I had a listing for an infrared
(not sure what it ‘s exact listing name was) I opened it up and put a
check mark in the box to disable in this hardware profile. I rebooted
and tried the modem. IT WORKED! I now have the modem working. I had
followed windbbooks installation procedures for both the installation
of the sound card modem combo and the infrared port. So I am not sure
why the infrared got on COMM2. I may have done the modem out of order
and did the infrared port install first. Anyway the important thing is
it works and I never used or think I will need the infrared port. Not
sure if it was a dream or where I read it but someone out there
deserves my thanks for getting me to think the infrared and the modem
problem was connected. I now previously I had looked at both and both
said no conflicts. I still have no listing of a COMM2 port in the
device manager.
Ok one last question regarding this whole thing is where did the
infrared listing go under network adapters. And even though I don’t
care is there a way to get it back and or assign it a new COMM port? I
looked all in the device manager and don’t see one listing for any
thing with infrared or IR or Ira. When it first hardware profile is
made can you make others for instances where you might take a laptop
to different locations where different hardware is hooked up. Or you
have so much external hardware peripherals that it is impossible to
have them all hooked up to a computer at once so different profiles
are for different hardware configurations? If a person makes more than
one profile how do you switch between the profiles and is a restart
needed each time a profile is switched. If a person wants to do what
ifs with hardware is it also convenient to make another profile to
play around with as to not mess up the original hardware setup?
Well anyway thank you to all that chimed in about this matter.

Default How can I find out why COMM2 port shows invalid or busy

The infrared reference you found under networking would be the network
support for the infrared comms port. There should be no connection between
this component and Comm2, but obviously there was in this case. Perhaps the
network component was installed when the infrared port was at Comm2, so it
had some sort of reference to it which interfered with the modem trying to
use it, or perhaps it is permanently configured to refer to Comm2. There
should be no particular connection between the infrared port and Comm2 other
than that it is common for machines to have one physical serial port (comm1)
and one infrared port( comm2). The documentation you saw may have been a
warning that this 'default' connection can cause problems.

It is not unusual for a virtual comms port to not appear in device manager.
Note also than W98 generally does not support altering an interrupt other
than by reinstalling the driver with changed parameters (and that option
isn't always available).

Different hardware profiles are used for different hardware configurations
(for instance, a laptop plugged into a docking station) when the peripheral
drivers aren't able to cope with these changes for themselves. With the
introduction of the PCI bus the ability to reconfigure things on each boot
meant that the need for multiple profiles pretty much disappeared, but it's
useful for disabling faulty devices that insist trying to load their
drivers, and for testing as you mention. However, setting up different
profiles can make startup much faster when the profile matches the current
hardware. See: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/236963
