Default File 'REGDEF' not found

When firing up Windows ME, I get the above error
message: "File REGDEF not found". The system seems to work
OK, but is the message important?

Please reply to
or to newsgroup.

Thank you.

It's probably the result of cleaning a virus infestation - try this
Start|Run
type
MSCONFIG
click OK
click on the Startup tab
Click on Cleanup
Click OK out, and reboot on request.

See if that clears the problem.

It seems not; all I get is a message saying: "All startup items
loaded
from the Registry have been verified and obsolete items have been
removed".

Thank you for the suggestion ...

That's the report from MSCONFIG - what happened on the reboot?

If the error message is still there, then you need to go back into MSCONFIG
and Uncheck the offending item(s).

The error message, reporting the absence of REGDEF came up
again. No difference.

I can't see anything in MSCONFIG about REGDEF ... I don't even
know what it is.

I've also looked in the MSoft Knowledge Base and that came up
with nothing, as did Windows Help.

Let's start again on a different tack:

Check in Msconfig for any oddities.
(Start-Run-MSCONFIG-Startup tab)
If you cannot see anything in Msconfig then:

Start-Run-msinfo32
Click the + beside Software Environment to expand.
Click Startup Programs
Ctrl+A to Select All, Ctrl+C to Copy.
Paste that information in your message.

I can't see anything out of the ordinary there.
Can you try disabling a few at a time and rebooting until you narrow
it down and report back?

I should be able to ask Microsoft themselves as a purchaser of their
product ... I'll send an email.

Meanwhile, something else has appeared that puzzles me -

I use Windows ME; on the bottom row of the screen is an item
that says it is "UMBD v. 2.001_42". The title of the little screen
is "UMSD". When I right-click on it and choose 'Close', it
doesn't close. Does anyone know what it is and what is the
'Progress Information' all about?

(As I write this, it isn't there; but I've seen it today. It comes
and
goes.)

I strongly suspect that this, whatever it is, should not in fact be
there ... maybe it's somehow connected with the 'REGDEF'
problem?
