Check out the Opera user group at

http://my.opera.com/community/forums/forum.dml?id=26

Forum Rules of Conduct and Posting Rules (please read before posting)

for further info on 10.5.

User reaction seems deceidly negative. E.g. "Bookmarks are
now unusable. Opera has gone horrible wrong. Please reverse
this."
http://my.opera.com/community/forums....dml?id=452161

Could you actually, you know, describe what you want Opera to do? Then
someone might be able to accomplish it. Ranting and raving accomplishes
nothing.

It appears that Opera did what it did with 9.5 and released a
piece of software not ready for prime time.

I want it to provide the user functionality that it always
has, since Opera 4.

Unfortunately, with so many functions broken since Opera 9.27
and no apparent interest by Opera in fixing them, black
background color schemes, cache file extensions, the ability
to disable java separately from javascript, it doesn't do
that.

I've seen a lot of complaints about the latest versions of
Opera. It's the best browser but sometimes I wonder if they
drink too much or something. The interface changes all the time,
options differ with ever minor update, etc. A little insane -
still, the best...

Except...

This is even better:

http://opera-usb.com/download.htm

There is a version 9.64 - I was lucky enough to DL ver 10 a
while ago and it ROCKS.
No install - just unzip. Runs like a dream. Of course, took a
while to get rid of some of the annoyances - but still, the best
(although nowhere near as fast as OffByOne ;-) .

There /is/ a 10.50 USB - it MAY run better than the standard
10.50.

I never tried the "original/full" Operas and had used 7.23
(IIRC) for years. But the constant flash problems were very
annoying. OperaUSB ver 10 fixed EVERYTHING.

Anyway... Might want to try the 8.64 OR the 10.50 USB versions.
May be better.

FWIW, my ver 10.00, build 1750 does have enable Java and
javascript separately. No idea about 10.50 OR 9.64.

I am DONE with ****ing around with kmeleons and foxes and other
crap.

Opera and OB1.

HTH, although not the /best/-written post...

If these versions don't do it for you I can upload USB10.00 to
some file sharing site.

(WHY don't people provide ALL old versions for ALL software?)

Older is almost always better. I've read posts from people who
/still/ use Opera 5.12.

Opera fixing them that way we have Opera 10.50
For Newer Version is the fix for the Older Version,.
For Opera New Version 10.50 that can be run on old System!

Now I use Opera for the lack of support from Microsoft for win98
I would like to run Windows Live Mail on win98 ... So I run Opera Mail to
make up for the lack thereof!
I would love to have the Internet Explorer 7 or 8 for the Tabs,.. So I run
Opera Browser to make up for the lack thereof!

I would love to have the Newer Version of Mozilla Firefox.., So I run Opera
Browser to make up for the lack thereof!
Look like All Browser are kissing XP and up Ass tilling you that you need to
get a newer Version of Windows!

But Opera not that way, .... that's why there Browser is the fast's Browser
in the world .... and will be Number One too!

OTOH, it seems Opera 10.50 is a NIGHTMARE. Visit opera.general
for a sample.

SNIP

I dont understand how any literate computer user would use
or like Opera.

"Literate" is not equivalent to "intelligent enough to realize
the advantages and willing to spend some time thinking outside
the box and learning how to use the best program for the job".

I tried it many years ago, a very early
version. Then I tried ver 5.x several years ago, and a
year or so ago I tried ver 8.x. I have always hated it.

Different strokes...

While I do everything to avoid using IE, I'd use IE if the
only choices were Opera and IE. Thank God for Firefox,
although I am not pleased that FF no longer makes their
browser for Win98, But the older versions still work. I'm
not trying to bad mouth Opera, just being honest, based on
the times I tried it. I guess 3 tries (3 versions) and
it's out for good. I will never try it again. I can not
even say one good thing about it. Everything about it is
horrid. It's one of the worst pieces of software I have
ever used. If they did a survey of the worst software
people have ever used, Opera would be at the top of my
list.

Well, for most "literate" internet users, IE would be. FWIW,
Nero CD/DVD burning software is at the top for me (I find its
design simply demented and infuriating). Still, it is probably
the most used app for disc burning. Why? It comes with just
about every burner sold. Just like IE comes with every copy of
Windows. There are people who blindly follow anything.

Anyway, you have certainly made your point. And you are not
alone, see
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Usage_s...f_web_browsers

Many people get instantly tuned off by Opera, the minute it
fires up, either because they are too used to whatever they're
used to, or because setting up Opera the way you WILL like it
takes some time and research. Most people are not willing to put
in either time or brain cells. That's why we have the Web, and
webmail.

While I will admit it can be useful, I hated the 9 rectangle
"quick access" screen that Opera 9+ opens up with, but guess
what? There is a simple way to turn it off. Etc.

I didn't know about opera:config (you put that in the URL
address bar to set up the more complicated preferences) until
someone told me, and it is still VERY difficult to find some of
the settings, and they are **very** badly explained, or not at
all. The help file only exists on the Opera site and I have not
found it helpful to put it *MILDLY*. And I find it strange that
Opera designers change their mind about various interface
details ALL the time. But that doesn't make the BROWSER bad.

AFA safety, Opera has always beaten ALL the other browsers
including FFox, and is usually left out of safety comparison
tables prepared by the competition for that very reason -
because it is safer than any of them.

I also like the fact that almost everything (Opera claim
/everything/) can be done with the kbd, since it is SO much
faster than mousing around. But I admit it is not so easy to
find some of the shortcuts (but there is the ng opera.general
and, if you have the patience, the help files).

Not to mention most people would rather spend 30 seconds or more
with a mouse trying to select part of a word than to use Ctl,
Shift, and arrow keys to do the same in a few seconds. A few
weeks ago I mentioned the shortcut Win-M in another newsgroup.
Several people (who are NOT newbies, and who I consider
intelligent and knowledgeable) thanked me for making their lives
SO MUCH easier. I was speechless. Basics.

While you do not specify /exactly/ what you mean by "one of the
worst pieces of software", usually that means something does not
work well or at all.

The only problem that I have experienced with Opera was the
flash plugin crashing constantly - which has been totally fixed
in 10.00 (USB, anyway - I have not tried the full official
version) as I mentioned in the previous post.

Anyway, the very idea of (and especially ANY cultural or
intellectual validity of Flash) is highly debatable. (99% of the
content - especially on the most common sites like YouTube - is
idiotic, the quality is unacceptable to anyone who isn't half-
blind and half-deaf, etc.) IMO, we would be much better off
without Flash, just like we would have been much better off
without TV making morons of everyone in the 60's-80's (and
continuing to do so for those who have not totally abandoned
idiot box #1 for idiot box #2).

I really don't care what people use. My primary browser is
OffByOne. If speed, ease of use, and safety are important to you
and eye/ear candy, Flash, and javascript are not, you should try
it. It will blow your mind.

I ONLY use Opera when I /have/ to - even though it is the best
and fastest /full-featured/ browser.

Doesn't lack of javascript mean that many pages don't work?

Can you specify your own style sheet?
