Installing Ethenet card fails Resumed testing

FYI, Win 98 is located at C:\ Win 98 and this location is specified in the registry. There are no other copies Win98 cab files. Regarding D-Link card. This trouble condition occurs not only with the D-Link card. I have also "installed" in a base Image condition the following: Trendnet USB to 10/100Mbps Fast Ethernet Adapter Airlink PCI Fast Ethernet Adapter. Both installations triggered the no port available, inability to go internet. without bothering with a clean boot, simply uninstall all items from Network applet, power down, replace card and, without installing any software, install drivers directly. Pending on your answer to above I'll proceed. Put the *contents* of the Win98 folder on a floppy for easy locating. Done. I'll be back on line after 2 p.m.today |

And it's not available in WIn98, I now remember. Only Windows ME, 2000 and above. Wat *is* availabel is the ICS client, and that should be listed nder Add/REmo0ve Programs main tab. If it isn't, I'd reinstall it, without going through any clean boot, then uninstall it. Only I don't know off the top of my head where to get it. I'll see if I can find it. Win 98: Burned a CD. Only I suspect a SYS file or two should also be present. I'll look into that one, too. But not until tomorrow. Still, it the other NIC isn't working, either, then it's not just a problem with the drivers, something else is broken. In fact, since you can get on the network, just not to the internet, I have to think that ICS crap, or a broken IE, is to blame. Have you tried a simple PING? More test results, thought not exactly what you were looking for,....
Maybe. Uncheck Dicrec Cable Connection and Hyper Terminal. You're not using either one. As for ICS, as I mentioned, that's for *providing* ICS services to other computers -- this computer is the one connected to the internet, the others connect through this computer. Found the following "ICS Troubleshooting " at the following site: http://www.practicallynetworked.com/...oubleshoot.htm * " Make sure you uninstall ICS via the Add/Remove Control Panel. It's under Windows Setup - Internet Tools. Don't just delete the ICS Network adapter. (Thnx to Jerry Stewart for this tip.) * 02/14/00 If you're having trouble getting ICS to install or re- install after you've uninstalled it, try this hint from Kent England of SOHOinter.net: Sometimes after you have un-installed ICS, you cannot get ICS to re-install from the Add/Remove Programs, Windows setup tab, Internet Tools, ICS item. Sometimes the Internet Connection Sharing option does not even show up. Find C:\windows\inf\ics.inf, right-click, and select "install". This should force Windows to re-install ICS. Be sure to have your Win98SE CD handy, although you may be able to skip installing files because the uninstaller does not remove any/all files. Then again, this is a stuck uninstall, so no guarantees!" ----------------------------------------------------------------- I located the ics.inf file and installed it. I now have under Add /Remove Programs; Windows Setup Tabs "Internet tools" and under it I now have "Internet Connection Sharing" entry . I then proceeded to install ICS and then remove it. So I placed a check on ICS and progressed to the installation where Windows wants to reboot and it did, and immediately experienced the problem: no internet but able to go intranet. Checked back to see if ICS was still checked off and it wasn't. What do you suggest? |
