Default "clean boot" problems

Hi!

In accordance with instruction from the great guru, Gary
Terhune, I've been trying to wet up a clean boot
environment so I can properly defrag - but have
encountered the following problems:

1. Running msconfig, setting "selective startup"
without "load startup group items" doesn't work; after
repeated attempts, even after deleting (almost - see below)
all c:\windows\temp folders and files, it reboots with
this item still checked.

2.there are 4 files it won't let me delet (3 .dat and
1 .txt)

3. Scandisk won't complete scanning c: - (gives error
message: has repeated 10 times, should it continue?".

4. defrag will not defrag c: - just hangs forever (12
hours??)

Any suggestions???

Have you tried in Safe Mode ?

You should try a ScanDisk then Defrag in Safe Mode.

You mentioned clean boot. As I understand it you selected "Selective startup"
and
de-selected "Load startup group items". However did you also de-select the
other
four items: Config.sys, Autoexec.bat, System.ini & Win.ini. When you do
this, click
the corresponding tabs at the top to make sure everything has, in fact, been
de-selected. Click Apply and then OK. You might also try this BUT DO IT FIRST:
Start\Settings\Task Bar & Start Menu and de-select Show clock. When you
reboot,
there should be nothing showing in the lower right portion of your screen.
Also, your
desktop image will appear different as a clean boot uses a 16 colour setting.
Good luck!

Jon
Sounds like you are not in a CleanBoot environment. Try again;
Start/Run and type MSCONFIG
Check SELECTIVE STARTUP and remove the checkmarks in;
Process Config.sys file
Process Autoexec.Bat file
Load startup group items
(leave the checkmarks in System.ini and Win.ini files)

Then click APPLY and restart computer. You should now be in a
CleanBoot environment and ready to tackle the instructions in Gary's
list.

No need to use the clean-boot method.
Have a look here, by MS MVP Ron Badour:

and

Here is a little utility to automate it for you:
