Default "Bad Command or File Name"

When I first turn on the computer and it is loading up,
there is a black screen which stays up for a couple of
seconds. This screen in the middle has a statement "Bad
Command or file name". How can I get rid of that?
I think it is related to scan-disk. Whenever I run Disk
Cleanup, it says scanning Old Scan disk in the root folder?

If you can help my email address is:
dcl(remove

Needs to be very simple instructions.
Thanks Dan

Wow... what's the chance of the two of us having the same problem and
posting at the same time... ;-) (See above)

Hit F8 while booting, and choose the step by step option. Write down the
command which causes the problem.
Run msconfig (Start-Run-MsConfig-Tab startup) and remove the mark for
this command.

Hi,

What is in your autoexec.bat file?
StartRun; enter sysedit and click ok.

A handful of windows will open up; find the one titled Autoexec.bat and
copy the contents of it and include it in a reply to this thread.
Close all of the files that opened. If you are prompted to save changes,
click NO.

It looks like I'm going to have to spend money for the
phone tech support at Microsoft. Probably wait until
Monday. I don't want to uninstall McAfee. (Virus Scan)

Open the autoexec.bat in notepad.
Press CTRL+A ( This will select all content which will be higlit when =
selected.)
Press CTRL+C ( This copies the selected content to the clipboard, you =
do not see it happen nor need to. )
Close the autoexec.bat and DO NOT save any changes if asked.
In your response to this thread in the NG click once in the opened =
response window, you will now have the blinking cursor in the window.
Press CTRL+V ( This pastes the copied contents in the clipboard from =
the clipboard to the response window. )

Send message when finished.

So I'll do it before the day is over and if you get=20

Dan,

Open the file, right-click on it and select "Select All"=20

from the menu=20
that pops up; this will highlight the contents. Now you=20

can either use=20
ctrl-c or right-click again(with stuff still highlighted)

and select=20
"copy" to place it in the clipboard. Then just paste it=20

into a reply by=20
putting your cursor where you want it to be placed and=20

either=20
right-click and select "paste" or use ctrl-v. Again, when=20

you close the=20
file, if it asks to save changes, select NO.

OK Dan,

No problem. When you copy something, it is placed in the clipboard,
there is nothing else you need to do. It will stay in the clipboard
until you either shut down or restart, or you replace it by copying a
different item. The clipboard only holds one copy operation at a time.

You are doing fine, I just didn't explain it to you properly. So, try it
again, knowing that "copy" puts it in the clipboard for you.

Practice it a few times. I see you're using the web to access this, so
go ahead and right-click on this message, click "select all"(don't worry
if it highlights more than you expect), then copy it by using ctrl-c or
by right-clicking again and selecting copy from the menu.

Now, click the "post reply" button, when the window pops up, click once
in the reply area so that you see the blinking cursor and then you can
use ctrl-v to paste it there or right-click and select paste. Of course,
there is no need to send that message, just close the window.

Let me know if you need more help.

MM
