New Install of Windows & W-TShooters question
Hello group,
I have a new install of Windows and I have installed all critical updates, therefore my TS's are not working as I would expect. My question, I do have the fix that MS-MVP George (Bindar Dundat) has created. However, it does not restore the troubleshooters?? I know what will restore them... reinstalling them, via rt. clicking on the Tshoot.inf file and having my OS CD ready. I did the above action on a previous fresh install of Windows-98-se after getting all critial updates. This is the question;..... If I reinstall my T-shooters via rt. clicking Tshoot.inf file, *am I not removing the kill-bit in the registry that is suppose to be protecting me*?? Thanks for clarification. Star |

George supplied a workaround to allow you to use the troubleshooters and then
disable them again. This is a workaround for the latest update to IE that broke them. Fixing them by installing tshoot.inf only works if the original update that broke them was installed, but not the later update. Once you install the second update that breaks the troubleshooters, you must use the temporary workaround.....right-clickinstall on tshoot.inf no longer fixes it of the second update was installed. It is the later update that sets a kill bit, not the earlier update. My standard blurb on the problem: There are two different fixes, depending on the Windows updates you have installed. The original fix for the older update was this: First, click Start Settings Folder Options View tab, and click to enable "Show All Files" and click OK. Click Start Find File or Folders, and search the C:\ drive for a file named Tshoot.inf...it should be found in the \Windows\Inf folder. Right-click Tshoot.inf and click Install on the menu that appears. If the latest cumulative patch for Internet Explorer is installed, there is only a workaround. Hi Glen,
I just restored my TS's. I've done the fix before, however, I had concerns and I didn't restore them since current install. I unzip the T-shooter fix (2) files (1) being readme text and send the file not readme text to desktop as shortcut, doesn't work, also T-shooters remain broken in Win-Help. So... I must go to Tshoot.inf and reinstall, etc... which I've done before. *The above is what really troubles me, cuz I felt I was undoing the fix that was suppose to be protecting me. After, I install Tshoot.inf... indeed the desktop shortcut on works for the TS's. BUT... now this even troubles me more, *they also now work again inside Windows Help*, you know that, right? That's what has troubled me, so the concept must be to use *only* the TS's shortcut and I'm safe, am I correct, this is the only assumption that I can understand? I hope I'm clear, I was not going to do the fix and just leave them be... am I correct in my understanding? Star "glee" wrote in message ... Hi Brian,
**I just restored my TS's**. I was reluctant, cuz I'm not sure I really understand the concept of the fix. I can apply the fix... it's really the concept that troubles me???? As I just wrote to Glen, w/new install and having *all criticals* you must first but the shortcut fix on your desktop, next you must actually reinstall Tshoot.inf, which my feeble brain tells me.... bad action, cuz this action removes the protective kill-bit in the registry. I'm not quite sure, but I believe this as being true. After, you reinstall TS's via your OS CD, W-TS's DO work again inside W-Help, mine do? So... I **must not use W-Help to access them**. I should **only my shortcut** which I have not added to my start menu, correct? Star "Brian A." GoneFishn@aFarAwayLake wrote in message ... This is not doubting you but I have reason to believe you do not have =

If you have the 2nd update installed you will have the key = mentioned below with the kill bit (name/data "value") present in the = registry. I thought he explained it in his text file = included although now that I check he only mentions clicking the icon to = run the wizards which may confuse some. Ok now, after a good nights slumber I have: Booted another 98SE machine which is fully updated and did not have = GG's TShoot installed. Tried the Windows tshoot wizards which failed. (HELP Troubleshooters no longer work.) After step (a) is done once, it won't have to be done again, looks like, till the next IE cumulative. I did not have to reboot, but I did do the Kill Bits with HELP closed. Here is how I turn the Kill Bit on/off, not with GG's script... Two separate Windows Update criticals took your Troubleshooters away, for security reasons. http://support.microsoft.com/default...;en-us;Q188867 Troubleshooting Windows 98 Startup Problems. This article contains a link to what it says is the equivalent of the Windows Help Troubleshooters... http://support.microsoft.com/support/windows/tshoot That's it. But, here is how to get them back when offline... First, "START, Find, F&F, Tshoot.inf"; R-Clk it & select "Install". If you still don't have the Troubleshooters... (1) "START, Run, RegEdit" (2) Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\ActiveX Compatibility\{4B106874-DD36-11D0-8B44-00A024DD9EFF} Compatibility Flags 0x00000400 (1024) Dword value 400 by (a) Clicking plus signs, beginning with "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE", (b) & ending with "ActiveX Compatibility". (c) Finally, click "{4B106874-DD36-11D0-8B44-00A024DD9EFF}" itself in the left pane. (d) Now, you see "Compatibility Flags 0x00000400 (1024)" in the right pane. (e) "Registry menu, Export Registry file". This will create a ".reg" file of the entire Key that is open... all the items in the right pane & all sub-keys in the left pane (if there is a plus sign). Give it a name & location of your choosing, even to the Desktop or My Documents. Then, to undo the following, you will be able to simply click that file, to Merge it's contents back into the Registry. Actually-- name that one "NoTrouble.reg". It will look like... ....Start..... REGEDIT4 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\ActiveX Compatibility\{4B106874-DD36-11D0-8B44-00A024DD9EFF}] "Compatibility Flags"=dword:00000400 ....End....... (f) Close RegEdit. You now have an "undo" .reg, named "NoTrouble.reg". (g) Make a copy of it called "Trouble.reg". (h) Open "Trouble.reg" in Notepad. Change the "dword" to look as follows... all zeros... ....Start..of "Trouble.reg"... REGEDIT4 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\ActiveX Compatibility\{4B106874-DD36-11D0-8B44-00A024DD9EFF}] "Compatibility Flags"=dword:00000000 ....End....... CAREFUL: That "HKEY" is one line, with TWO spaces only. One between "Internet Explorer", & the other between "ActiveX Compatibility". Make sure it looks that way in Notepad, before you click to Save. Also, you must have an empty line at bottom. Now, "Trouble.reg" gives you the Troubleshooters. "NoTrouble.reg" will give you security by taking them away. Remember to undo it, after you are done looking at the Troubleshooters. (2) By default, when a ".reg" is clicked, it will Merge into the Registry. To alter the default behavior: "START, Settings, Folder Options, File Types tab". Scroll to & click "Registration Entries", click the "Edit" button, select "edit" in the window & click the "Set Default" button. Now, when you click a ".reg" file, it will open in Notepad for examination. Brian, Thanks so much for posting back... this issue has troubled me!! Like
I mentioned, I did a complete re-install of Windows sometime back, initially after the TS's were disabled by Microsoft and I applied the fix. I remember, I looked and tried W-Help to see if they were available to me, curiosity!! I noticed they were available, did work!! That's why, I didn't want to reinstall them via the Tshoot.inf after my new current installation. I thought, I'm reinstalling them, I'm defeating the purpose of the kill bit. [Strings] TShoot_Desc = "Microsoft Local Troubleshooter" TShoot_DirName = "TShoot" Thank you, Star Tried to run the Windows help tshoot wizards which failed. Removed kill bit entry in registry and regain tshoot wizards, merged entry back into registry and tshoot wizards fail. Install GG's tshoot.exe workaround. Run GG's app and Windows wizards fail. Run Windows help and wizards fail. Right click tshoot.inf and install, both GG's app and Windows wizards fail. Reboot. GG's app now works, wizards successful and Windows help wizards fail. With GG's app running, check registry entry for kill bit which is absent. Shutdown GG's app, check registry and kill bit entry is present. All works as should. Reboot 98SE machine mentioned in last post. Still no Wizards with either GG's app or Windows help. Run tshoot.inf install, check wizards which fail. Reboot, all is working as should. GG's app controls the registry entry to remove the kill bit when run and replace when closed. Running " Windows help wizards" (not GG's) still fail. I never thought a reboot was required and don't believe I had to do it on the first 98SE when I originally installed GG's app, yet it appears this is the case now. Stymies me a little but that's how it all went down. It now makes me wonder if one has to go thru the re-install of tshoot.inf, then install GG's app and reboot at some point to gain functionality due to a later update? For now I've done what I'm going too as the wizards/GG's app work (or don't) as they should/shouldn't. BTW, both 98SE machines were updated using the Security update CD and finished at the MS Update site. Can't see why but perhaps this method has something to do with it. I do have one more 98SE machine available to test that does not have GG's app and is fully updated ONLY from the MS Update site. Perhaps Glen has some insight on this. -- Brian A. This is not doubting you but I have reason to believe you do not have the 2nd update mentioned installed. The "Windows help wizards" should not work thru any of Windows help. GG's workaround app should be the only way unless you have removed the kill bit from the registry yourself. If you have the 2nd update installed you will have the key mentioned below with the kill bit (name/data "value") present in the registry. When GG's app is installed it is what is to be used for the tshoot wizards, not Windows Help. I thought he explained it in his text file included although now that I check he only mentions clicking the icon to run the wizards which may confuse some. Windows help should not be used, GG's app is what should be used to run the wizards when installed. Ok now, after a good nights slumber I have: Booted another 98SE machine which is fully updated and did not have GG's TShoot installed. Tried the Windows tshoot wizards which failed. Checked the registry for the ActiveX component kill bit which was present at: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\ActiveX Components\{4B106874-DD36-11D0-8B44-00A024DD9EFF} Name: Compatibility Flags Data: 0x00000400 (1024) Tried to run the Windows help tshoot wizards which failed.
