Default Problem with Win98.....

Hi Heather, I *think* the link you are after is :-
news.microsoft.com
set up in OE under Tools | Accounts \ Mail
(remembering to munge your email address)

Then choose the news groups you want

Hi All.....the following message was posted to me on a non MS news
group. I wondered if any of you could help because I absolutely
cannot remember how to access the MS news groups in toto.....or as a
newbie......the link one clicks on to get to the MS news groups.

Any thoughts?? Or a link?? I guess I could post it to one of the 98
groups.

---------------------------------

Heather,
I've got a problem. Started a week or so again.
Win 98
On boot, error messages,
Occurred in this sequence.

Missing or corrupted display.sys c:\windows\command

Missing or corrupted system.dat c:\windows\command

they each happened several times, but I managed to get it to boot by
turning
off, then back on, each time.

This a.m.
Missing or corrupted config.sys c:\windows\command
Edit line 1 and 2

I have 3 config.sys files in various locations.
The most recent is dated 2005 inc:\windows\command
There's only 2 lines in them.
I don't know what to edit???

My gut says that area of the hard drive is corrupted, but not sure.
If I rename the file, then make a copy with correct name, will the new
one
go back to the corrupted area?

or somewhere else I should be looking at config.sys?

I'm not really sure what you're asking for but...
This is the link for a newbie to set up Microsoft newsgroups in
Outlook Express with just one click:
news://msnews.microsoft.com/microsof...dowsme.general

Or maybe it's this:
http://www.microsoft.com/communities...s/default.aspx

If these aren't what you mean, please explain!!!

I think that is sort of it. Probably I have to put MS in front of that.
I will mess with it later. Just want to get to the server for MS. So I
can give her the whole bunch of MS groups. Does that make sense?? She
knows a lot, but I don't know Win98, so figure she can find out what she
needs on one of the 98 ng's. Trying to talk her into upgrading, but not
quite sure what the problem is.

Thanks Mart....Heather

OK.....took the first half of George's link and that is the one!!

news://msnews.microsoft.com

This will now get saved once again, grin.

Heather

Once you have your MS Newsgroup account in Outlook Express,
there are numerous ways to see the list of Newsgroups that
are available, here's 3 of them.

1, Click the whacking great big 'Newsgroup' icon on the top toolbar.
2, Tools Newsgroups.
3, Ctrl+W

news is an alias for msnews and both resolve to the same group of IP
addresses (there are more than one) as can be seen by:

D:\Tempping news.microsoft.com

Pinging msnews.microsoft.com [207.46.248.16] with 32 bytes of data:

Figgles,

Jim Eshelman used to - and probably still does - have a list of the MS news
groups at aumha.org, that you can find easily enough from the index page.
Click the one you want and it opens in OE. Useful in certain circumstances.

Default Problem with Win98.....

Gracias, Arturo......the problem is/was that I was going to have to
explain on a totally different news group as an off-topic message to my
friend how she could access the MS ng's and then how to find the ones
she wanted. And as she prefers to remain anonymous for good reasons, I
suppose....I can't write her at home via email.

But you guys eventually got what I was asking. I just didn't explain
myself very well. (G)

Default Problem with Win98.....

Not as easy to find as it used to be, but take a look sometime, Figgs:

http://aumha.org/support.php#msng

As I recall - can't test it now as I'm in Linux - you click the link, it
opens in and downloads into OE, then when you close it you're asked if
you want to subscribe to the group. When you say "I do" you'll have the
Microsoft server set up automatically and, if you want to end it you
have to go to Reno. Though I might have that last bit wrong.
