Default System date change?

Does anyone know of anything that might cause the system
date to be changed? McAfee online virus scan did not
detect any problems.

Thanks for information.

Perhaps the BIOS battery is about to go flat and it isn't
keeping the time and date properly.

See he http://www.pcbuyerbeware.co.uk/BIOS.htm#battery

Can you please describe exactly what is happening in more detail? Is the
clock just losing time? Or is the date being reset every time you restart?
Always to the same date? What date?

What, *exactly*, is happening?

To determine whether it is something in Windows or something pre-Windows
(battery/BIOS setting)...

(1) Set clock in Windows. Shut down overnight (or long enough).
(2) Boot to Command Prompt Only, by holding CTRL as you boot to get the
Startup Menu, if it isn't already enabled at "START, Run, MSConfig,
Advanced button".
(3) Enter "TIME", no quotes. (Then, ENTER, to exit w/o changing.)
(4) Ctrl-Alt-Del to boot Windows.

Was the time wrong in DOS?.. It's the battery or BIOS, then. Otherwise,
it is something about Windows, maybe the Startup Group or a driver.

C:\time/?
Displays or sets the system time.

TIME [time]

Type TIME with no parameters to display the current time setting and a
prompt for a new one. Press ENTER to keep the same time.

C:\time
Current time is 6:54:27.68p
Enter new time:

I am puzzled how date got changed to 2099. I think it was
the main problem slowing down Windows 98 SE and causing
date related problems.
1)I read that date problem could be due to bad battery but
computer is only 4 years old and average span is about 10
years.
2)User could have changed it.
3)application may have changed it. Malware?
I think hired geek straightened out problems correcting
date. No viruses were found.

My question is which of the three happened. But I may
never know. Thanks for information though.

Default System date change?

I would like to try this tomorrow. However I am not exactly sure of what I
am doing. I piddled with the Windows ME which I have at home. The options are
different in the booting.. I ended up going to DOS through the Accessories
and getting the C:\Windows prompt. But then I got hung up with the time
thing and got stuck with the "Enter new time".. I could not enter a time
which it accepted and could not exit because Windows ME did not permit that.
Finally I manually shut it off.

Could someone give me more explicit instructions please.
Thanks,
Susan

Did you try just hitting the ENTER key, to exit TIME w/o changing the
time? Also, what time did it display? That is the format you should use
to enter a new one. Thus, in SE DOS, it would be... 6:54:27.68p. The "p"
means PM.

However, things may of course be different in ME. (I don't know it.)
Enter "TIME /?" to see what options ME DOS may have given it.

Default System date change?

We shut off the computer yesterday at 4:00 after setting time to correspond
to wall clock. I went in and got to the command prompt and entered time.
The time was fine.

I guess I will never know what initially changed the year to 2099. The
hired computer geek reset the year and also replaced MFC42.DLL because there
was Illegal Operations and details in one show the MFC42.DLL. He also
installed Windows Updates through Feb 2004.
