Default Download problems

Hi Dorlsae :-)

It may be more than just an IE related problem that you are not able to
download. Try this:
Tools Internet Options Advanced Browsing
Uncheck the Enable 3rd party browser extensions
If this allows you to access the Internet, then you can be sure you machine
is infected. However, that fact that it does not, does not mean that you
system is not indeed infected. Follow the steps here to fully clean your
system of any hidden scumwa

Dealing with Unwanted Spyware and Parasites:
http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/unwanted.htm
Be aware, your Anti-Virus won't detect all types of warez, Trojans, malware,
worms, etc., and neither can other adware or spyware related programs such
as AdAware and SpyBot. They don't have the proper definitions. They must
also be run in Safe Mode with Hidden Files enabled in order to fully scan
all files. Even if you have run such programs and nothing shows up, it does
not mean your system is clean. It takes a series of programs to fully clean
your machine. Some very aggressive and damaging variants of malware can
replicate themselves repeatedly, or mutate, if not removed properly.

I am also cross-posting this to the Windows ME newsgroup so that perhaps
some of the guru's there can assist with finding a solution for your
problem.

Hope this helps.

Hi Jan Il:

A couple things to note:
First, the IE fix won't work for me because I can't download the fix for
Internet Explorer. Also, I have Windows ME as opposed to XP.. if that
changes any of the 2nd part of the isntallation.

Try the following and see if it will help:

IE Fix

If not, and you are sure your system is free of all scumware, then you
should try a repair of IE:

First, disable your AV:

Explorer 6 works on earlier versions of Windows.

You will need to uninstall WinXP SP2 from Control Panel - Add/Remove
Programs and then reinstall Service Pack 2. Follow the information he

Hey Jan Il,
The date is set correctly on the computer, and both SSL 2.0 and 3.0 are
checked. Unfortunately, it still did not work. I know you're running
out
of
suggestions, but do you have any more?

Hi Dorlsae :-)

Try the following:

Internet Explorer Cannot Download Office Documents from an IIS Server
When
Content Expiration Is Set to Expire Immediately
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=317208

Make sure that IE is configured to use the SSL 2.0 and SSL 3.0:
Got to ToolsInternet OptionsAdvanced tab
Scroll down to the Security section scroll down and check the box next
to
Use SSL 2.0 and Use SSL 3.0 if not already checked
Click OK

Then verify the Date/Time setting on your machine is correct, as SSL
certificates have an expiry date, and if the date on your computer
isn't
correct it may prevent you from connecting to secure sites.
Go to Start Control Panelclick Date/Time
On the date tab check to make sure that the date and time settings are
set
to use
the current date and time and it is correct, and then click OK

Hope this helps.

Thank you Jan Il for continued patience in this problem. I did try
System
Restore to a date before the problem began, but it didn't work. I
do
not
recall installing any updates or 3rd party toolbars, nor have I
installed
ad
or popup blockers or other programs. Maybe I did, but I don't
remember
of
any, and I can't see any changes that have been made. No other
programs
are
available. But something's deifnitely wrong.

I'm trying to download your basic filed off the Internet (mainly
PDFs
and
Microsoft Office program work, like Word and Excelt Document).
Everytime
I
try to download and attachment it says, "Internet Explorer cannot
download
...(long url w/ partially my inbox address)."
"Internet Explorer was not able to open this Internet site. The
requested
site is either unavailable or cannot be found. Please try again
later."

I'm also having problems receiving streaming video or other types of
multimedia as well.

Hi Dorlsae :-)

Have you tried doing a System Restore to a date prior to when the
problem
began? Did you install any updates or 3rd party toolbars, ad or
popup
blockers, or other programs such as Zone alarm, etc. at the time
the
problem
began? What type of files are you trying to download? .exe,
images,
PDF's,
etc. Are you getting any error messages, if so, what is the exact
wording?

Hope this helps.

I'm sorry Jan,
The Windows version that I am currently using is Windows ME.
I've
gotten
up
to #7 of your directions; however, I was unable to change the
directory
in
the command prompt. It tells me it's invalid. Also, I did
search
for
a
"hosts" file, and none was found aside from the exceptions you
named.

Hi dorlsae :-)

You don't mention the version of Windows you are using, which
really
is a
must when asking for help in the newsgroups, but, try the
following
and
see
if it helps:

Open Internet Explorer. On the Tools menu, click Internet
Options.
2. On the General tab, under Temporary Internet Files click
Delete
Files.
3. In the Delete Files dialog box that appears, click OK.
4. Under History, click Clear History.
5. In the dialog box that appears, click OK.
6. Quit Internet Explorer.
7. Log on to the computer by using the account of a user who
does
not
experience the problem, and then open a command prompt.
8. Change the directory to the following path:
drive:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Temporary
Internet
Files\Content.IE5
where username is the name of the user account that has the
problem.
9. Type del index.dat, and then press ENTER.
10. Close the command prompt, and then restart the computer.
The Index.dat file is recreated the next time that you log on to
the
computer

also..

Check for a hosts file (just "hosts" not hosts.sam or lmhosts)
in
these
locations:
Windows XP. C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC
Windows 2K. C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC
Win 98\ME. C:\WINDOWS
You may have to enable the viewing of hidden files.

Rename your HOSTS file to OLDHOSTS and see if the problem
persists.

Hope this helps.

I'm having a difficult time trying to download off the
Internet
right
now.
I
can't download anything, nor can I download attachments off my
email.
It
tells me that "Internet Explorer was not able to open this
Internet
site.
The requested site is either unavailable or cannot be found.
Please
try
again later." At the same time, I cannot get any streaming
video
or
audio.
I do not have any type of spyware or antivirus software that
is
causing
this
type of security.
