Clogged Arteries???
Hi from Ohio,
Running a Dell 4100, 40G, 11G used 28G remaining, 512 RAM, McAfee, Zone Alarm, Popup Stopper, Ad-Aware. I have Belarc, CW shredder, Spy Bot, Spyware Blaster, Registry Mechanic, all the Microsoft Office programs, etc. I have about 90/95 icons on my desktop. Some of these are folders with about 1300 MB of pictures in the various ones. On a reboot my resources are 69/72 and GDI is 91%. Sometimes these resourses seem to disappear even with very little open. Booting is slow as if every program is checking for updates at the same time. The mouse is erattic during this time. The icons all look the same like a dog eared sheet of paper with one red and one blue dot. Then they start putting on their costumes so I can recognize them without reading the subtitles. They pop out one at a time like the stars a night. I don't have a CD burner and it would be a little tough to get a lot of that stuff on a zip. Have run everything and have found no spyware. Last week McAfee reported a virus that could not be deleted or immunized.I finally had to disable system restore and restart it. It was acting a little strange anyway. Some of the old check points were not working. Ocassionally when I go back to my desktop my little icons have put their masks back on and I have to hit refresh. Yes Noel, I got rid of Norton a long time ago. Occasionally my mouse sputters or a game might slow down but I think that is Mailwasher checking the mail. Outlook is set to check only manually. Thanks guys and gals. Kelly Ohio |

Shaving your 'multi-Gig' desktop down to something within reason should
solve your issues. As Alias said, the Desktop is not a place for storage....with the possible exception of an 'install program' or the like and then, just temporarily. All the more so since the desktop is monitored by system restore unlike say the My Documents object which means that system restore could well be backing up files deleted from the desktop leading to even further potential space problems.. with the possible exception of an 'install program' or the like and then, just temporarily. Clogged Arteries???
Thanks for the replies. I suppose it's proper to go to the last post to
answer. Of course this is for all. I dragged all my photo folders into my documents and also some folders with installation programs. Most of whats left are shortcuts of a few kb. I also noticed that for a few days that when I opened IE, I saw "detecting proxy settings" in the lower left corner. I went to IE properties, lan settings and unchecked automatic. I think I clicked that on a "page can not be displayed" window last week. My documents folder now has 1.7 Gig. Will be checking back for any additional input. Seems a little better. I was reading a previous post here about stuttering sound. After reading the conversation between Stephen and Noel, I think I'll let mine stutter Thanks Kelly "Mike M" wrote: Heirloom wrote: Shaving your 'multi-Gig' desktop down to something within reason should solve your issues. Clogged Arteries???
Hi, Heirloom and group. Am coming late to this thread, but noticed that you
and Alias mentioned the desktop is not the place for storage. I see that my entire My Documents folder is on the desktop of my ME Dell. Not a shortcut, but all 9.8GB of it. Can I just move the folder somewhere, and where? Or will this monster folder cause problems if I move it -- or attempt to move it. Will other apps have trouble finding it? It's a shared folder (wireless network) if that's an issue. Thanks for any advice. Joe Starin "kbsmith9" wrote in message ... Thanks for the replies. Hey Joe!!!
Right click the folder and then on Properties.........I'm betting what you have on your desktop is just the shortcut to the folder .
