Default Can't defragment

Hi all

I can't defragment my hard drive. Scan disk runs with the
maintenance wizard fine then disk defragmenter starts but
stops shortly after saying some other program is stopping
it from running. System file checker ran with no problems
detected. Windows 'working in backgroud flag' is
constantly visable although my hard drive lights aren't
flashing. Please help.....losing the will to live:-(

Boot your system to DOS. A DOS version of DEFRAG.EXE resides in the
C:\Windows folder. If not there do a Find/Search to locate it. Run it
under DOS. Just to be safe you may want to run the DOS version of
SCANDISK.EXE first to give your drive a clean bill of health. Select
the Thorough scan. This could take hours, have an MP3 player or similar
handy to help you pass the time.

You cannot Defrag in DOS without destroying your long filenames, and no, there is no
DOS version of Defrag in the Windows folder.
