Printing from old dos based program
Hi guys,
banging my head against a brink wall here and hoping someone can help. Just started working in this new place that has an ancient database system thats written in ProIV or something along that lines (difficult to say as the guy that was here before me didn't believe in documenting anything!) It seem have been upgraded over the years but is still printing using some sort of Dos system! When reports are printed any machine thats new to the network doesn't print the formatting lines of the report it instead prints a bunch of jubberish character codes. So somethng has been changed on the old machines to allow them to print correctly but i've no idea what. I've installed all the fonts from the other machines, i've even moved over all the dll's incase there was something old going on. The system prints to the default printer so some machines are printing to a network printer using the same driver. The older ones work and the newer ones don't! so its not the driver. Its not restricted to one OS either as i had to rebuild an old Win98SE machine last week and its got the same problem! I've no idea where i'm going wrong here! Anything else that prints, like word, excel or any other application is fine. Its just this damn thing! |

How are you doing the printing? If your PC is using terminal emulation to
connect to a UNIX server running the Pro-IV application and are using the Pro-IV 'pass thru' printer, then the characters are probably getting munged in the terminal emulation program. Check the character set it is configured for, and make sure that bits aren't getting stripped. How you do this depends on the emulation software you are running on the PC. If the printer is connected directly to the system the problem is with the printer definition tables maintained within Pro-IV. You will need the system reference manual to find out where the tables are and how to use them. If the application is running on the PC then you need to redefine the printer type to match the installed printer or, more likely, to match the custom printer driver that has been installed to enable Pro-IV to talk to a Windows printer. You can either select the correct printer type or define a new one. Again, you will need the system reference manual to find out how to do this. Be careful about casting aspersions simply because its old. Pro-IV is an excellent example of an 'event driven' database programming environment - a very powerful concept that more modern databases still haven't completely caught up with. -- Jeff Richards MS MVP (Windows - Shell/User) "moose" wrote in message ...
