Default Need "open with" in right click context menu

Many centuries ago I once knew (due to the graciousness of a poster in a
forum such as this), a way to add the "open with" so it appears any time you
right click on a file. It's been so long since I've need that info I've
forgotten how to do it. Can anyone provide that procedure - I'm thinking it
was a registry edit but I just can't remember.

TIA!

Hi jackson,
Here is an example based on something simple, Notepad.
Go to c:\windows folder, right click on Notepad, then Copy,
then under the Windows Tree you will find a folder called 'Send To'.
Paste Notepad in there and voila, its now on your right click menu.

regards Jane

That's not what he's talking about, Jane. (Note: This doesn't apply to
WinXP, which already has an almost permanent Open With menu.)

When a file has a defined association (filetype), the right-click
Context Menu doesn't show the Open With menu. You can add things to the
Context menu--say, three types of text editors for TXT files--or use
your Send To trick, but if you want to use an application for a
pre-associated file that isn't permanently listed in the Context Menu
(or Send To sub-menu), you have to hold down the Shift key while
right-clicking to force the Open With menu. What the OP wants is to
always have the Open With menu available.

I forget, for the moment, how to do that, but here's a little app I'd
try, if I was in the market. If you do try it, please give us a report,
OK?

Shift | Right Click will give you Open With in the context menu on a
case by case basis.

This site I found it with a Google search on "add open with right
click context menu" has a registry edit it says will add Open With
permanently. I haven't tried the hack so offer it as-is:

1. Regedit
2. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ Software \ CLASSES \* \ shell \ openas \
command
3. If this key isn't there then just create it
4. Give it the value of C:\WINDOWS\rundll32.exe
shell32.dll,OpenAs_RunDLL %1

To have "Always use" in "Open with" default to unchecked: Change the %1
to %0

YES! That is exactly what I'm looking for! Thanx! I'm sure that data in
my brain was overwritten with something to do with XP!
Thanx again.

YES, YES! And that trick about unchecking that stupid "Always use" box by
default also rocks! Thank you ever so much! I KNEW there was a way, just
was suffering from CRS.

Thanx again!

Didn't work for me, and the instructions couldn't be literally followed
regarding copying the value, although you can still do it.
Note: there is this statement in the registry tips contents page (
http://www.activewin.com/tips/reg/ ):
"Note: All the tips are labeled properly so that nothing will go wrong."
What a relief.
