Default disable "contents" context menu

I have win98SE, I would like to get rid of the contents right-click menu.
I do not know if that is a powertoy, native to win98, or possibly
a Norton utilities function. Any help is appreciated.

tx,

john

It's a "context" menu. It provides commands that are appropriate to the
"context" in which the item you're clicking is found, usually a sub-set
of commands you can also find in the menu of the window in which you are
operating. While it's an innate Windows function, what is shown there
can be edited for each filetype. However, I'm not sure there's any
overall switch that turns them off completely, nor am I certain that
*all* context menu items can be turned off.

May I ask why you want them turned off? Might be easier to disable the
right (or left) mouse button.

disable shell items context menu is available in Poledit, changes a registry
setting, First install policy editr
establish polices (import the .adm files)
open registry
local machine
scroll down the whole list of policy changes opening the + signs as you go,
to "disable shell item context menus"

Poledit resides in tools\reskit\netadmin\poledit folder of the Windows 98
and 98SE cd,

READ THE INSTRUCTIONS before you do ANYTHING
many of the options/tweaks in Windows Policy editor will lock all users out
of windows if not applied exactly correctly and in sequence.
READ THE INSTRUCTIONS before you do ANYTHING repeated for emphasis

"START button, Run, RegEdit", & navigate to...

That is...
(a) Click plus signs, beginning at "HKEY_CURRENT_USER" & ending with

(b) Click "Explorer" in the left pane, & look in the right pane.
(c) R-Clk the R-Pane and select New, Binary Value, & name it:

(d) R-Clk "NoViewContextMenu", in the R-pane, & select "Modify".
(e) Change it to: 01 00 00 00.
(R-Arrow to left of first "00", use delete key, type "01".)
(f) Exit, & it may be necessary to reboot.

WARNING: Do not get carried away in the Registry. It is very important
to the proper functioning of Windows. Muss it badly, & you must boot to
DOS & "Scanreg /Restore". Then, choose the date of the last successful
boot from the five offered.

The rest of this is just informational...

Uninstall it if it is the Win95 PowerToy.
It will have an entry in Control Panel-Add/Remove called "Contents
Submenu"

Oops. This is overkill, if a specific Context menu named "contents" is
all one wants to remove. Better try what Edwards said, instead...

Glad to hear it. You did well to ultimately uninstall it properly with
the .ini. Well, did it remove the .dll you had put back?

|
| Thanks all,
|
| Alan hit my problem - I removed the 'Contents Submenu'.
|
| Before coming back here, I had found from google searches
"content.dll"
| and "content.ini". I removed them manually, rebooted, it worked.
|
| I put them back after reading this, and did the uninstall, in case it
| removed any registry entries.
|
| Hi Gary,
|
| #1 It is annoying. Going through the right click, many times I end
| up with a screen full of files, when I did not intend on using
| 'contents.' Perhaps worse for me than others because my menu speed
| is set to no-delay, so contexts pop up when quickly arrowing through
| them.
|
| #2 I was troubleshooting the fact that 'find' is not available when
| clicking on my 'C' drive, and some other folders. It was my guess
| that too many context menus, or some individual one, was hiding the
| find function. I was right-'find' now appears with every folder
right-
| click. I might guess from Alan's post that I installed win95 toys
which
| do not belong here in win98se?
|
| Thank you all for your assistance.
|
| John

That is perfect, then, & the advice passed down through the ages is
correct: first, try it properly with the proper uninstall routine. Only
after that should fail, possibly do your own deletes. OK, thanks.
