Default Stuck with huge dysfunctional buttons & dialog boxes - solution

If you by accident set the 'screen size' in
display-properties-settings-screen area in windows Millenium too small,
all the buttons and dialog boxes and text will get so big, that you
will be unable to reach the buttons you need to reach to get things
back to normal. Then you are stuck with a problem.

If this happens, in Windows Me navigate to C-Windows-system. The system
restore icon is there you can run it by clicking it, it will bring you
back to normal. I am not sure but the main page of the help section
might have a link to system restore.

The best way to be prepared to deal with such an eventuality, is to
have a prominent shortcut to system restore on your desktop.

I experienced a nutty problem with Windows Me. I was experimenting with
screen size in Display properties-settings-screen area. I tried a
"small" screen size; then buttons and text and dialog box I was working
with became so big it was impossible to reach the buttons and inputs
needed to reset.

I was lucky enough to know that system restore would fix the problem.
But having been away from the Me computer I forgot where the shortcut
icon was.

In the help section (almost unreadable because everything had gotten so
big), I was told to access system restore through start-programs-
accessories; but the accessories tab was out of sight and unreachable
because everything had become dysfunctionally big.

The help section blabbed on and on about all the things that can be
done with system restore, it had plenty of links to useless pages, but
it had no link to system restore, and did not reveal the location of
system restore. Retrospectively I now remember that maybe this link to
system restore is on the front page of the help section, but if it is
not in the pages dedicated to system restore, and those pages do not
mention this link, how can we be expected to remember that it is on the
front page of the help section?

I ran a search for system restore on the Me, could not find anything.
That is because the files and folders and exe name connected with
system restore, do not have both words in them, and the exe name has
neither word in it.

The help section said System Restore was in start-programs-accessories.
I looked in programs-accessories could not find it. That is because
start-programs-accessories is not the same as programs-accessories. Can
common users be expected to understand that?

Finally, luckily I found where I had put the shortcut to system
restore, ran it, and brought the computer back to normal.

Am I wrong to think that the kinds of problems I encountered as
described in this post, show deficiencies in Windows ME?

Even the greatest programmers make mistake and through becoming aware
of such mistakes we become able to avoid such mistakes in the future.

This is not to say that I despise Windows Me. As I learn more and more
about XP XP seems better compared to Me, and as I get rid of the jazzy
default look of XP so that it looks more and more like classic windows
and my old Windows Me computer (this inclines me more to serious
difficult work), XP looks better and better compared to Me, but Me
still seems worse in certain ways.

For example, with Me, you can set large title bars and caption buttons
for windows, without causing as a result a ballooning in size of the
quicklaunch and start bar icons. My Windows Me computer was set up with
small icons in the quicklaunch and start, combined with big title bars
and caption buttons. I still miss that setup. With XP, the size of the
icons in quicklaunch and start is tied to the size set for the windows
title bars and-or caption buttons!

With my XP computer, the help section is filled with the word 'XOX' as
a replacement for some other word they never got around to putting in,
and none of the graphics are visible.

I have no idea why you chose to crosspost to a Win98 newsgroup as
Win98 does not have System Restore and it is usually a simple matter
of changing the setting and pressing the Enter key. There is no
necessity to press an Apply button.

How small was the screen size you selected? On my system the slider in
Display Properties does not go lower than 640 x 480 and I'm still able to
see and access the Display icon in Control Panel. If your setup allows lower
resolutions than this, I'm sure you could have rebooted into Safe Mode
(which defaults to 640 x 480) and reset the screen size from there.
Another way to get to Display Properties is to right click on a blank area
of the desktop and click 'Properties' from the popup options menu.
Incidentally, System Restore is found he
StartProgramsAccessoriesSystem Tools
And no, the problems you've encountered do not show deficiencies in Windows,
only 'user error'. Put it down to experience.
