Default Copy files, directories, and subdirectories

Hi all,

I am writing with a problem that needs expert help to
solve:

I have a hard drive that cannot be accesed in Windows 98
but I can access from from a dos prompt when I boot with
the Win98 install disk.

What I want to do is to copy certain files, directories,
and included sub-directories from this drive to another
drive. Xcopy is not on the Win98 install disk and I am
unsure about the Copy command syntax.

If anybody has ideas or suggestions, please let me know.

thanks,

Arthur Perkins

Take the hard drive that you are having problems with and connect it
temporarily in the machine that is working. You can just stand it on its
end in the bottom of the case and connect the power wires and ribbon cable.
Make sure the jumper switches are right, that the drive is detected by the
BIOS and then use Windows Explorer to transfer the files.

COPY won't copy subdirectories unless you do them one at a time. Do COPY /?
to see the syntax you need.

XCOPY will do what you want. Use XCOPY /? (or XCOPY /? | MORE) to see a full
list of options. You don't need to run it from the floppy - find where it is
on the hard disk and run it from the hard disk after you boot to floppy. If
for some reason you can't access it from the hard disk, copy it to a floppy
and run it from the floppy.

Note that since you are booting to DOS then you won't be able to use long
file names and they will not be preserved in the copy.

Why can't you access this disk from Windows? What happens when you try?
