Default switching over to a cable modem

I recently got a high speed internet cable modem to replace my old dial up
connection and am trying to connect it to a rather old Dell laptop running
Windows 98 SE. I purchased a FA511 ethernet PCMCI card and succesfully
installed the drivers. But when I try the ethernet connection and open up
explorer the laptop prompts me to use the dial up connection. It doesn't
seem to know the ethernet is there. Do you have to some how turn off the
dial up?

Any ideas would be much appreciated. Thank you.

In Internet Explorer, Tools menu, Internet Options, Connections tab, tick
"Never dial a connection". And/or if you are never going to use that old
dial-up again, you may as well delete that DUN connectoid (your new cable
broadband probably also allows DUN connections in case the broadband goes
down.) You can do that right there on the Connections tab.
