Best of luck No panic or rush, sort out your family tasks first. I'll
try and keep an eye on this NG for any further posts whilst with the other
trying to recover some lost images from a compact flash card. Grrrrrr.

Up early, checking your mail before urgent family tasks.
Have house guest to cater to, for short spell, but will
try to install what obviously didn't install in my 98
installation plus upgrade to ME. As for viruses, my
Norton System Works (run from Master HD) shows all clean.
And will go Safe Mode to uninstall modem if its install
actually worked. Thanks for your patience.

Okay, progress of sorts. I managed to find where the check boxes are,
for Resource Monitor, and checked it for installation, and then I
couldn't find a way to get it to install. It put a C:\ something in
the window; that didn't work. I tried my ME upgrade CD, gave it F:\
and let it browse, but it couldn't find it to install. Next visit
over to the ME HD I'll make sure the modem is out of the way. And I'll
try he check/uncheck/apply etcetera. I'll do the modem uninstall as
I wait for advice on how to get Resource Monitor to 'take'.
As for Norton System Works, be assured that it is not on the ME
hard drive anyplace, and I don't go online on that ME system. Modem
is 56K and only for FAXing out. But I use Norton from my Master XP
system to scan all drives for viruses. Tell me when you can, and thanks
for your patience.

Again, trying to follow instructions, progress of sorts.
First, in Safe Mode, I am able to run MS-DOS.....doesn't ask for
more memory. I get to Device Manager from SettingsControl Panel
SystemDev. Mgr.... Now all traces of the Conexant modem have been
removed, and all that shows is onboard 56K modem. I'm having trouble
with DUN components. BTW, there's a lot there besides DUN, that I
don't know what to do with. Just about everything I try to do there
asks for the Installation CD but with or without my help, browsing
to the CD I have doesn't do any good. I know that you're trying to
back me off to a system that works, and then build from there back to
all that I need. Perhaps there's a way to do a "Repair Install" from
the CD. In any case, that's where I am.

Look for the folder containing the file BASE2.CAB which is usually in
either C:\Windows\Options\Install or C:\Windows\Options\Cabs or if not on
your hard disk in the Win9x folder on your upgrade CD. Then next time you
try and install something such as the Resource Meter and it asks for a
file point it at the folder containing BASE2.CAB and all should proceed as
intended.

I've absolutely no idea why you are running a command prompt (what you
call MS-DOS but it isn't) in Safe Mode. I know I made no reference to
needing to do this in anything I've written to this thread up until now.

Just about everything I try to do there
asks for the Installation CD

See my previous post where I describe what you need to do.

Perhaps there's a way to do a "Repair Install" from the CD.

Yes, but only if you want to effectively trash your system. :-(

Mike, I just test by clicking that icon, as a quick way
to determine if I'm still in a "need more memory" mode.
But enough of that. I made progress over in ME.
I managed to find the folder that had the BASE2.CAB AND
typed that in, and I believe it installed. When I went to
AccessoriesSystem Tools, I found System Resource Meter
there to be clicked on. I tried clicking it but nothing
happened. Maybe it dumps it into a file. But that's where
you said we'd learn about the 64K....
Now that I have the Resource Meter in the menu......what next?

I tried clicking it but nothing happened.

You're not having much luck are you! Try again. The Resource Meter
minimises to the System Tray when started. It's the icon with the three
bars which hopefully are all green but some may be red. Right click for
details.

Mais non, Mike....this is a great hurdle I've passed.
I'll go there right now.
