Default A couple of ME questions

Hi folks

two questions

1) What does SYSINIT do immediately after it runs scandisk?

2) Can anyone give me a brief description about waht ME does when a machine
is set to go to sleep (like hitting a button on a laptop to freeze)

Many thanks to Heather and Ant who have helped me realise that I was not
getting through to everyone in this group.

Default A couple of ME questions

When the start-up program has finished POST (Power On Self Test) and the
loading of BIOS routines, the boot process starts. It follows the following
steps:

a.. MBR is read first. The sector number of the primary partition's boot
record is found here.

a.. A small boot program is read from the primary partition's boot record.
That activates the loading of the two hidden files.

a.. IO.SYS is saved to working memory. Besides creating an interface
"downwards" to the BIOS programs, IO.SYS includes a small program called
SYSINIT. This program starts the next steps of the boot process.

a.. Now MSDOS.SYS is read from the disk.

a.. Then SYSINIT looks in root directory for a file named CONFIG.SYS. All
commands in CONFIG.SYS are executed, gradually configuring the PC to have a
ready and usable DOS.

a.. Then SYSINIT looks for the command interpreter COMMAND.COM. If that is
not found, we will get an error message about this. When it is found,
AUTOEXEC.BAT, which contains the last information for personal configuration
of the PC, is executed.
a.. (From http://www.karbosguide.com/hardware/module6a6.htm)

Sorry, but, I really don't understand what you are asking in your second
question.........could you be more specific or provide more details, please.

Remember though that when booting Win Me neither config.sys nor
autoexec.bat are processed nor is command.com loaded. Win Me loads in a
different fashion than Win98/98SE which is why it no longer supports "real
mode".

snip lots more stuff clipped

Thanks Heirloom, but you may well have got all that old info from a document
I wrote in the 1990's called "An idiot's guide to computer viruses".
Curiously, there are still some copies of it on the net (they all have bits
missing though)

Thanks anyway

I hope I have not offended anyone here because of the alias. I just tend not
to use my real name much when I am on the net. The name Lancy Howard belongs
to a character played by Edward G Robinson in a movie called The Cincinatti
Kid

Ah - thought I recognised it

Let's go back a few steps, here......
You have ME - and you either have, or had, Norton's crapware on it at some
time??

What were the exact symptoms as exhibited just prior to the current loss of
data - and what form has your (loudly) complained-of 'lockout' taken?
Have you tried using System Restore to get back to some semblance of
normality?

That's a relief. You have been puzzled by the familiar name. Jeeze, I was
worried that you had been offended. Just before you posted I had actually
just sent a message to Heather and asked her opinion about whether I should
apologise to you directly.

Let's go back a few steps, here......

Having typed out the story of this sick machine I realise my post would be
far too large to be a post in a conference. Also, it is me that needs help
with WinME, not the conference needing a diatribe about malicious software..
Would you object if I forwarded it to you as a Wordpad attachment to an
email?

Thanks Mike, my bad. Did a search with "Win Me" in the forefront, came up
with that and didn't look at the previous pages. I was so tired I didn't
even think about the config.sys, autoexec.bat and command.com not being
loaded. Guess I was still in DOS mode.
