Default Internet Explorer 6.0, clicking on "Tools/Internet Options" error message...

When I am in Internet Explorer 6.0 and want to change my Internet Options if
I go to Tools, then click on Internet Options I get the following message,
"This operation has been canceled due to restrictions in effect on this
computer. Please contact your system administrator. "
I can access Internet Options two other ways, one in Control Panel and by
right clicking on Explorer on the desktop and choosing properties. Does
anyone know how to get the so called restriction canceled so I can use
Internet Options within I.E. 6.0 .
I am using Win98 SE

Thanks
James

Open Regedit (StartRunRegedit), and navigate to this key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Inte rnet Explorer\Restrictions
Delete the "NoBrowserOptions" value, and reboot.

It may exist here instead:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Int ernet Explorer\Restrictions
or
HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Software\Policies\Microsoft\In ternet Explorer\Restrictions

A simple way to do all this, if you have Windows Scripting host installed, is to go
to Doug Knox' site and download his script to fix it:
http://www.dougknox.com/security/scr...strictions.htm

Right-click his "Download" link, click Save Target As from the menu that appears,
and save it in a folder of your choice. Then double-click it to toggle the
restrictions on or off.

Thanks for the help glee & PA Bear, it worked fine, how did the Registry get
changed in the first place, and yes I have Spybot installed, is this the
reason?

Thanks

Did you read the link Bear gave yo pertaining to SpyBot? It explains how it can
cause this setting to be changed:
http://www.safer-networking.org/inde...=faq&detail=24

quote
This can happen if you use Spybot-S&D in advanced mode and you have used the
Immunize feature without reading all the text

Please start Spybot-S&D again in advanced mode (usually from the Start menu group
Spybot - Search & Destroy, until you've already changed the desktop icon to advanced
mode), select Tools in the left bar - IE tweaks.
There you'll see a group Recommended miscellaneous locks. Untick the checkboxes in
front of both Lock IE... options. You may need to close all Explorer windows, and
maybe even restart Windows before these changes take place.

Hint: this lock function has been added mostly for multi-user environments where you
wouldn't want other users of your computer to change your IE settings. If you are
the only user of your computer, there's no real need to enable them.
