Default Windows 98-ME Upgrade

I want to move my existing (Windows 98, AT) system to another computer. I
want the power management facilities provided on the new (ATX) machine to
work properly as well as the existing software, for which I have no
installation media, to remain available. Can I:
Clone the old drive onto the new in the old machine,
Put the cloned drive into the new machine,
Boot to the startup floppy with CD-ROM support,
Put in the Windows ME CD and run setup /p j and install into the same folder
(C:\Windows),
and have it work as I want?
Are there any preliminary steps to ensure a good outcome?
I hope this makes sense,
ern.

In theory, yes, but with great difficulty. It can be done.

In practice, no. (Not only no, but hell no.)

Try the LangaList back copies (www.langa.com). You may get some help there.
Fred Langa occasionally discusses it. He usually discourages it.

P.S.: While you're on the site, spend $12 or so and subscribe to a year of
the LangaList Plus edition. Or at least subscribe to the LanagList free
edition.

Well, thank you for that. We discuss such matters here as well if possible,
but usually after trouble has ensued.
