Default Saving Passwords in dial up connex

when using dial-up connections for internet access after going through the
setup process, i am prompted for my password each time i try to log on. the
checkboxes for save password and connect automatically are greyed out and
cannot be checked. my goal is to enable both of these features. what am i
doing wrong?
