Antivirus software for 98

Thanks for the recommendation. I downloaded Opera and upon opening I
got the warning "the system library msimg32.dll is old or missing."
Any thoughts about this?

Unless you have the ME version of msimg32.dll installed you may or will
get errors or inabilities UNLESS you disable the functions which it is
needed for. MOST download sites try offering the XP version; these seem
to cause anomalies in the graphics for many so make sure you locate the
ME version if necessary.
If you have a WindowsME original CD, you will find the file inside the
compressed cabinet file Win_12.cab. You can open the cabinet file using
WinZip. IF NOT then look for the ME version to put in Win98SE systems.

Put this file in /Windows/System folder of your Windows 98SE installation.
If it gives an error of file in use then:
1. Place the new file in C:\temp or wherever you download [adjust the
below commands to your folder/directory needs]
2. Boot into command-prompt mode by pressing F8 quickly after BIOS/CMOS
screen [or your manufacturer logo] and selecting command mode. Or you
can choose restart in Ms-dos from shutdown menu.
3. Rename old file, command -
ren c:\windows\system\msimg32.dll c:\windows\system\msimg32.old
4. Copy new file command -
copy c:\temp\msimg32.dll c:\windows\system\


As for your other issue here with the fault, it can come from improper
INTERNAL coding in the Flash object or other formats OR calls made from
within them to other system inclusions; *AND/OR* follow this
recommendation and read the below from other posts of mine regarding HOWTO:

I can't advise of what settings *you* should set other than use the
strictest possible for your particular usage. Also make sure to set
other limitations in your specific browser and system/OS.
AND, if possible, install whatever plug-ins are available to further

Unless you have the ME version of msimg32.dll installed you may or will
get errors or inabilities UNLESS you disable the functions which it is
needed for. MOST download sites try offering the XP version; these seem
to cause anomalies in the graphics for many so make sure you locate the
ME version if necessary.
If you have a WindowsME original CD, you will find the file inside the
compressed cabinet file Win_12.cab. You can open the cabinet file using
WinZip. IF NOT then look for the ME version to put in Win98SE systems.

Put this file in /Windows/System folder of your Windows 98SE installation.
If it gives an error of file in use then:
1. Place the new file in C:\temp or wherever you download [adjust the
below commands to your folder/directory needs]
2. Boot into command-prompt mode by pressing F8 quickly after BIOS/CMOS
screen [or your manufacturer logo] and selecting command mode. Or you
can choose restart in Ms-dos from shutdown menu.
3. Rename old file, command -
ren c:\windows\system\msimg32.dll c:\windows\system\msimg32.old
4. Copy new file command -
copy c:\temp\msimg32.dll c:\windows\system\


As for your other issue here with the fault, it can come from improper
INTERNAL coding in the Flash object or other formats OR calls made from
within them to other system inclusions; *AND/OR* follow this

Norton Anti-Virus 2002 is probably the best and least

AV program for win-98, and it can still be updated by downloading the

up-to-date with the most recent virus definitiona and scan engine. If
you can't find NAV-2002 on a torrent and you really want it - let me

If you are seeking an antivirus package to perform on-demand scanning

suspicous files (that you might acquire from the net) then I suggest
that instead of seeking an AV app, that you submit suspicious files to
virustotal.com where they will be scanned by 40 different AV programs.

My 98 machine still outperforms my XP significantly.

Because Windows 98 runs all apps in i86 Ring-0, has no cumbersome
privledge or security accounts model, and runs on the faster FAT32
file
system, it's a natural result that it's a faster operating system
compared to the bloated NT-based OS's.

definitions is completed. But everything is fine after that! That
v.4.8.1368 is fairly recent -- so I question whether they really will
ever abandon us lowly Win98 users after all!

Thought I had lost it couple of days ago, fired up the Win98 PC and
"Update Avast" only to be refused as the registration had expired.
Renewed the "Free Reg." for another year with no problems :-)

Very good. I see my updates expiration is set for 1/1/2011 -- the date
some say it all ends us!
