Default Restore broken?

Hi all:
NIS2006 is no longer for Windows 9x and Me. Wanted to changed to AVAST two
years go...now I did it 6 days ago. I used Add/Remove in control panel to get
rid of NIS but still saw many extra files.
To get rid of Norton Internet Security 2005 or rather what is left of it,
downloaded the Symantec Support program where three files are downloaded:
MSIFIX.bat SymNRT.exe symmsicleanurp.reg but there are still many
files left over as well as in the registry as can be seen in the CCleaner
(didnt use it). I also lost all my Restore points except for the three made
by Kerio (used as firewall).
Since then: no restore points made, except for the manual ones by
myself. Can you help. Any info you need: IN THE C:\_Restore there are 4707
files with 286 MB; in the Archive: 32 files, 85.6 MB etc.

Default Restore broken?

I seem to recall others posting that using Avast means no automatic SR
checkpoints are created. This doesn't have to be a bad thing, just
remember to make one manually each day and before making significant
changes to your system. The loss of your older checkpoints could be
because the number of files being archived when you were uninstalling NIS
meant that most older checkpoints had to be deleted so as to make room in
the archive for the newly deleted files. Too late now but it is at times
like this that it can be worth increasing the space allocated to the
restore archive for a few days.

Wrong. I just looked and have about ten system SR checkpoints dating
back to February, including one made yesterday.

Correction. I forgot I was in the Me group. My statement applies to XP,
not Me.

EZAV has worked well with Win ME. It's still offered with a 12 month
free license, if you want to try it.

Avast does break the setting of automatic restore points. I used it for
a while, and then switched back to EZAV. I continue to use Avast with
XP. If you don't mind setting manual restore points, it's not a problem.

II know that Avast causes few problems on XP, I have it running here on XP
Pro x64 however as you have now realised I was referring to Avast on Win
Me where others, including I think Harry, have reported problems.

Mike:
Any reason why I would leave 4,707 files and 85.5 MB which are the same
ones staring at me forl the last two years...wouldnt this be a candidate for
your routine about the System Restoone, which unfortunately I cant put my
hands on?? BG

Paul,

In case that message was addressed to me rather than Tom.

That you have 4.707 files totalling 85MB "stuck" in the archive and that
won't clear by resetting system restore ( System | Performance | File
System | Troubleshooting, check "Disable System Restore", immediately
reboot and then back to Troubleshooting and uncheck "Disable System
Restore" and once again reboot) could well be due to having had a
Symantec/Norton product involved. Clearing and resetting system restore
may well be the solution but may not fix the problem of Avast preventing
the creation of automatic system restore checkpoints.

So to to clear the archive and rebuild the control files I would suggest
the following:
a) Boot to DOS using a floppy. Do NOT choose "Minimal Boot" from the menu
when booting from a floppy but rather choose "Start computer with (or
without) CD-ROM support" otherwise the ATTRIB command will not be
available.
b) At the DOS A:\ prompt, type:

ATTRIB -H -S -R C:\_RESTORE
then
REN C:\_RESTORE OLDREST

c) Remove the floppy
d) Reboot your PC
e) Delete the folder C:\OLDREST
f) Check that an automatic system restore checkpoint was created.
g) Finally adjust the space allocated to the restore folder:
System | Performance | File System | Hard Disk and adjust the restore
slider to your preferred setting. A figure of 200MB is normally more
than adequate for day to day use allowing perhaps a week of checkpoints to
be available although increasing this to perhaps 400MB for a few days
during periods of large installs such Microsoft Office is advisable.

It might now be a good time to test that system restore is working
correctly. You can do this by performing the following test.
a) Create a shortcut on your desktop to a file.
b) Create a manual checkpoint
Could you create a checkpoint?
c) Delete the shortcut
d) Restore your PC to the checkpoint you created.
Was the shortcut restored? Did you see any error messages?
e) Reboot your PC
Was the checkpoint retained?
