Default Uninstall problems

I am trying to help out a friend who was given a Compaq computer that is
running 98 SE. After Windows starts the Windows installer runs, wanting to
install Word 2000 Pro- he has no such disc. I would like to stop Windows
Installer from running.

Here's a bit more info-
1. He is able to use his Word program.

2. In the install/uninstall tool in the control panel it lists that Word
2000 pro is present, as is Works and Office 2000 SR-1 and 2. None of these
programs will uninstall via the control panel.

3. In the registry HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Micosoft/Office is present and
HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Micosoft/Works is present, however there is no reference to
Word 2000 Pro

4. On drive C:\Program Files, Word 2000 Pro does not exist, but Works and
Office are present.

So far, I've looked around for the .msi for Word 2000, (program the
installer requests), but cannot find it, I suspect that it came with the
Works package, which he also doesn't have cds for. I have found the .msi in
the Works folder. I haven't looked in the temp or windows\temp yet to see if
there is some vestige still looking to install.

Any help would be appreciated.

Find out how he installed Office, Word and Works - that's the CD you
need. You won't be able to uninstall, repair or re-install without it.

Look in Windows\Installer folder for msi files, right click and select
Properties for the low down on that file. Msp files are patches,
Office 2000 SR-1 and SR-2 are patches, get all required at Office
Updates.

Office 2000 Pro was the highest level of Office 2000 offered, I assume
Word 2000 Pro that you are looking for is offered in the same way. I'm
not sure what other levels were offered but again I assume something
like home, work and Pro. Xp-ish like if you will.

Lee, thanks for replying. Since this computer was a freebie, he never
installed any of these programs and, to my knowledge, does not have the
discs. The Microsoft Office SR-1 Professional and Microsoft Office SR-1 Disc
2 , (which I incorrectly stated as Office 2000 SR-1 and 2). are not MSP
files, see http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;267839.
Instead, these are the full versions released in March, (?), that
incorporated SR-1. I think the Word 2000 Professional came with Works, my
suite came with a disc labelled Word 2000 SR-1- so probably something
similar. Anyway, I'll look in the Windows\Installer folder to see if there
is an errant msi and rename it first and see if that will stop the windows
installer from running at start up.

Since it's the windows installer that keeps running at start up I thought
I'd post it here. To be honest, I'm not sure if it is Word 2000 Pro., (which
doesn't really seem to exist as a standalone, which is what the installer
wants, the disc labelled "Word 2000 Pro."), that causes installer to begin
at start up or whether it is that the windows installer program might be
corrupted. Anyway, the Office/Works/Word groups seem to be more about
actually using the apps, and I haven't found anything about windows installer
running at start up. I suspect it was an install gone wrong because he
actually has a different functioning version of Word, (from MS Office 2000
Professional). But, I'll post my question there and see if I have any luck.
Thanks.

I bet it isn't actually the windows installer wanting to ruunn at startup r
ather then a feature in word or or one of the other components wanting to
intall it. try disableing the office startup in msconfig and anyhtign else
like mail or findfast..etc. see if one of those bring the installer into
action. If so then it is a feature office is trying to install. I have had
this happen on several machine after a windows upograde and it refused to
use the original cd to corect the problem making it seem like you had the
wrong cd. I forget the exact download but microsoft had somethign that fixed
it and allowed any office cd to work that was of the same genre.
