Milt asked :-
Is it possible to do a repair reinstll of ME? Yes - BUT!!! - not recommended without some major proviso's, however, see next bit. I'm having a problem with functions such as Defrag. and Scandisk hanging up and freezing the computer. Try running them in Safe Mode and see if they run OK there. If so, then there are issues with 'things running in the background' which can be overcome. How to boot into Safe Mode? Press and hold the Shift key or Ctrl key (or the F8 key) during power-up sequence). Also - if necessary - try running scandisk in Real Mode DOS by booting from your WinMe Startup floppy disk. Milt,
The provisos Mart mentioned are that you need to be very careful about reinstalling Win Me over itself if you have upgraded to using IE6 and/or Windows Media Player 9. If either of these are true special steps need to be taken before reinstalling Win Me such as uninstalling IE6 via Add/Remove Programs and renaming the WMP file wmploc.dll to wmploc.old. Failure to do either of these steps will lead to major problems and what is known as version soup and DLL Hell. -- Mike Maltby Milt wrote: Is it possible to do a repair reinstll of ME? Both problems you mention are due to the disc being occupied by other
functions in the background. Forget the reinstall, just try running Scandisc in Safe Mode. Don't use a 3rd party defrag. If you have an Intel chip, there's works better than anything else. -- I mastered Wordstar graphics! WTF are you on about, Corday?
Neither problem that Mike mentions has ANYTHING to do with 'other functions in the background' - it's simply that reinstalling earlier versions of IE and/or WMP over later ones does seriously bad things to version integrity - which isn't adequately checked during the reinstall. If you need instructions on the proper methodology of a reinstall, look here.... http://crashfixpc.co.uk/reinME.htm Unfortunately, some of it's a little outdated now, as Ad-Aware, etc are no longer Win9x-friendly - I'm working on a revision to address this issue - but the essentials are still true -- Noel Paton CrashFixPC Nil Carborundum Illegitemi www.crashfixpc.co.uk "Corday" wrote in message ... Noel,
Thanks for the link. I searched for something like that, but couldn't find anything. Milt "Noel Paton" wrote: WTF are you on about, Corday? Noel (and Mike),
I suspect Corday is mentally (though not actually) responding to Mart's reply. Although I think they're both making the mistake of for one reason or another disregarding that Milt says Scandisk and Defrag are 'freezing the computer', which I certainly don't recall as a consequence of the continual restarting issue. functions in the background. What on earth are you talking about? Your reply should be to the OP and not my post. -- Mike Maltby Corday wrote: Both problems you mention are due to the disc being occupied by other functions in the background. Mike,
Thanks, I understand what they said. I assume it's worth a try, because otherwise I'll have to reinstall Windows and every other program and application anyhow. Corday,
If I could run Scandisk in Safe Mode, I would not need to reinstall ME. Same for Windows Defragmenter.
