Default One Way Access via NIC in Gateway Solo 3350

Hi 98 Guy,

Thanks for those tips.

I tried your procedure for getting IP address, then Start, Find, etc.
but the results, after I clicked on "169.2......" in the "Found" window,
was "169... is not accessible". Note. The "Location" (Workgroup name)
is correct. I use the exact same name (case sensitive) on each of the
laptops. Also, "no error information available".

Regarding the Network icon in Control Panel and settings, I have
done that as I have done on the first two laptops that don't have
this issue.

MORE INFORMTION:

A friend gave me "Windows 98 Resource Kit". A large book with
lots of troubleshooting tips. The "net view" command on the Solo
reported, "Error 3787, you must log on...". This goes back to my
original posting where I said a reboot, after installing the Net driver, etc.,
did not produce a pop up Log On window with a slot for me to enter
a password. Note: This did occur on the first two laptops & net cards
I tested.

NOTE:

For testing purposes, I am using a CAT5 crossover between two
laptops. So far, the first two laptops were fine. I used one of the "good"
laptops with this Solo 3350 using the same crossover cable for testing
it's internal network, but so far it's a "one way".

Again, Thank You, John

Any ideas why this is "one way"?

Get the IP address of the PC you can't see or access. To do this, open
a DOS window on that PC and type "ipconfig".

The IP address might (or probably will) be something like 192.168.n.x,
where n will likely be 0, 1 or 2.

Once you know the IP address, go to the other machine and go "Start,
Find, Computer" and type in the IP address you found as described above.

You should be able to connect to the hidden / inaccessible machine that
way.

If that doesn't work, then next what you have to do is see if all the
computers can ping each-other.

I'm not sure if you have a network with 2 or 3 machines, but regardless,
go to each one and open a DOS window and use the ping command to ping
the other computers. You'll need to know the IP address of each
machine.

And one more thing:

In the network neighborhood properties on each machine you have a window
with 3 tabs (Configuration, Identification, and Access Control).

In the Configuration tab there is a list of network components. You
should see "Client for Microsoft Networks, Your ehternet card, NetBEUI,
and TCP/IP in that list (4 items). You might have other stuff in that
list, that's ok. But you need those 4 items.

There is also a file and print sharing button. Click it. You need to
set the "I want to be able to give others access to my files" to yes.
The option for printers is your choice.

There is also a setting to set the default protocal (netbeui or
TCP/IP). I'd set it to Netbeui on all machines.

I suggest that you have a look at this webpage:

http://www.wikihow.com/Set-up-a-Private-Network

I don't have time right now to give a more comprehensive response.

I think your main probem is the IP address's that you've assigned to
your machines, along with the gateway setting.

You should be able to ping each machine from every-other machine.
