Registry cleaners
I have one machine running XP Pro and another with plain old Win98. I
recently saw a series of posts on the XP Maintain Usenet group, regarding the use of registry cleaners with XP. The consensus was, DON"T, and NOT NEEDED. Therefore, I WON'T. But what about Win 98? Any harm using one, like Reg Seeker? Any benefit? I've been using it to clean out the dregs that Add/Remove Programs and other uninstallers seem to always leave behind. Any thoughts? Advice? Cautions? Ataboys? A better Uninstaller, maybe? |

Even in Win98, they say: DON'T, NOT NEEDED, DANGER, YOU WILL DIE-- just
as they do in XP! -- Thanks or Good Luck, There may be humor in this post, and, Naturally, you will not sue, should things get worse after this, PCR "MBIEnt" wrote in message ups.com... | I have one machine running XP Pro and another with plain old Win98. W-e-l-l-l I dunno, I've been using the Reg cleaner in System Mechanic for years. It frequently detects a dozen or more errors. I've just deleted all of them each time and haven't created a paperweight yet. The only time I came close to doing that was using WinXP's system restore. I don't recall the details but the restore process screwed up then I had to reinstall and the reinstall failed because one of the required files in the system repair partition was missing or corrupt ( yeah I have a HP Pavillion with a restore partition on the hard drive rather than on CD's the cheap mo-fo's) I had to take the thing to the local cyber-geek shop and have them install from a cd. Just be aware that Diddling the registry CAN have serious consequences. |

Registry cleaners
The problem with registry cleaners is that they often remove things and it
is not clear why they do so. I finally gave up on them years ago because I wasted too much time trying to puzzle through why the entries were being removed. While most registry cleaners have an undo file, it does you no good if the registry generated problem shows up a week or so later and it doesn't dawn on you that perhaps the reg cleaner generated the problem. If you have a problem with a W98 registry that cannot be fixed with: /fix /optimize or /restore, then I doubt that a reg cleaner will fix it either. -- Regards Ron Badour, MS MVP for W98 Tips: http://home.satx.rr.com/badour Knowledge Base Info: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?pr=kbinfo "MBIEnt" wrote in message ups.com...
