And the two of them fight over who should have it! Becs had to fight hard
to take it to Edinburgh for August. They both have good reasons to have
one of their own but that would mean them digging a bit deeper into their
pockets than either is inclined to do and might even require one of them
to think about getting a job. Fat chance at the moment. :-)

Are they all from the same mold?? Or is that 'mould', grin. Elayne was
just telling me last night that I could buy her the new Mac
laptop.......yeah, sure!! And she is a lot older than your two. However, I
will say that she was just kidding me.

Have you seen that new Mac desktop that is so thin? Amazing!! I saw it in
Best Buy a couple of weeks ago. Forget the name of it. (forget my own name
too, lol)

Cheers..Figgs

I was thinking of replying to Noel's post saying he
probably had no chance with your setup but decided not to vbg

I've nothing special - honest. Not that there's anything worse nicking
though either. vbg

Neither has actually "asked" but I know they would both like me to.
Trouble is that each has already had a rather large present this year
(graduation gifts, delayed in the case of Becs who I realised I'd never
given a present when she graduated). For one it was a holiday in
Thailand, for the other a rather nice digital video camera. Oh, and I
also gave them a rather nice PC with 17" TFT monitor and lots of other
goodies for their flat. So new laptops are out of the question as
probably are Christmas presents this year. :-)

I've just been looking at a rather neat new Vaio (sp?) laptop that a
neighbour has just got following an insurance claim after a break-in some
weeks ago. Very light, about 3lb, perhaps a little more, quite small and
with a beautifully sharp wide screen. I was quite envious but given the
price, I think it was about GBP1600, I don't think I'll be buying one let
alone two anytime soon.

Neither has actually "asked" but I suspect they've got close to it at
times. g

Gee.......would you like to adopt a rather charming graphic artist.....or
her mother?? I like your idea of *gifts*, grin.

I think it might be Viao, not sure. But 1600 GBP???? Even at our now
cheaper exchange rate, that would still be WAY MORE than I would pay.
(about $3,600 Cdn) Yikes!!

And E. bought herself a rather nice digital camera that was about 6 times
the price of mine. But she is a good photographer and she wanted it for her
trip to France. Can't wait to see the pictures.

She is busy restoring some really old photos for a genealogy friend of ours
in Australia, who insists on paying her for the work. She is insisting she
won't take it. Silly girl!! I know how hard she worked on the *special*
photo for her Dad last year. I think I told you about it......a picture of
Ron at about 8 years of age (with knobby knees in a British school boy
uniform) and she inset carefully-restored cameos of his ancestors in the
background. He was thrilled!!

Cheers....Heather

I was at my brother's a couple of weeks ago
- he has one of the new G4 PowerBooks (very nice, 17"(?) widescreen,
instant-on, etc!)
He asked me to install VPC and Win XP on it so he could run Money 2005
I can only hope it runs faster after the prefetch has done some optimisation
than it did when I left it (to be honest, I was surprised that it worked at
allg). One interesting thing I noted was that there's no boot sequence in
the VPC - it goes straight to the WinXP logo. Installing the XP was rather
fun - and took about two hours (and then I had to run the Security Update
CD - it was SP1 - and get the rest of the patches off WU - another couple of
hours....), activation went without a hitch, surprisingly!

Mike thanks for the help.

I ran pwledit.exe and had to click OK to have it continue, after that Power
on and reboot does not require a password.

Thanks, Brian

Brian,

No need for any new suggestions.

Rather than cancel out of the logon prompt, which by the way can cause
some problems such as the inability to save password since you will not
have logged on correctly an be considered instead to be a guest user,
click OK. You should not then be asked again for either a login name or
password.

Incidentally Network Neighbourhood and My Network Places are effectively
the same thing. On my boxes I have neither My Network Places or even
Network Neighbourhood but rather simply "Home" since the icon on the
desktop can be renamed to whatever the user prefers and in my case Home is
the name of my LAN. :-).

My computer HAS "My Network Places" at least that is where I am made
the change to 'Windows Logon'.

I have renamed the .pwl to .old like instructed in KB article 152104
(
http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;EN-US;152104).
I have restarted the computer several times and Windows has not
created a new .pwl file, which OK with me.

I still get the 'Logon' prompt and can cancel out of it and still get
to my desk top. Why can't the prompt be prevented/disabled.

Any new suggestions????
