Default windows detected a registry/configuration error

this is the error message i get when i start my computer

windows detected a registry/configuration error

i can't start it in safe mode or normal mode. how do i
fix this without loosing stuff i have on my computer?

I think the next part of the message says "Run Scanreg /Fix", so....

Boot from your EmergencyBootDisk and type

A:\ SCANREG /FIX

what is the name on the emergency boot disk? am i going
to loose all my files?

The EBD is the floppy disk you made when you installed Windows. If you
don't have one (and if the machine you're currently using isn't WinME),
you can download a program to make one from

www.bootdisk.com (choose the WinME OEM)

make it on the computer you're using to post these messages then run it
on your machine.

SCANREG/FIX fixes the registry, it's not going to change or set free any
of your files.
