Multiple ! flags for IDE controller devices? And CD-ROM problem
Installing an internal modem on my ThinkPad wrought havoc throughout my
drivers. Now W98 SE doesn't recognize my CD ROM drive. It's not listed in Device Manager. Could this have anything to do with multple ! flags related to IDE controllers? Here's what Device Manager shows: Hard disk controllers: -- Intel 82371AB/EB PCI Bus Master IDE Controller -- ! Primary IDE controller (dual fifo) -- ! Secondary IDE controller (single fifo) -- ! Standard Bus Mastering IDE Hard Disk Controller -- ! Standard Bus Mastering IDE Hard Disk Controller -- ! Standard IDE/ESDI Hard Disk Controller My system has a single 4GB internal HD. I also use a USB external HD, but the USB connection isn't working either (but first things first--my immediate priority is to restore the CD ROM drive). Thanks in advance. -- John |

Are you sure that you didn't dislodge any of the ribbon cables, both at the
CD-ROM/HDD ends and/or the motherboard ends when you attempted to fit the modem. Make sure that the plugs are firmly pushed home at BOTH ends of the cables. Mart "john" wrote in message ups.com... I need a clarification here. All the Thinkpads I have seen are laptop
computers.....exactly how did you install an *internal* modem in a laptop? -- Glen Ventura, MS MVP Shell/User, A+ http://dts-l.org/goodpost.htm "john" wrote in message ups.com... Regardless of that, the problem is probably just duplicate entries in Device Manager, which puts the computer into compatibility mode, which "hides" the CD-ROM" drive. |

Remove the modem, start the computer in Command Prompt by
tapping the F8 key repeatedly during bootup, then type "scanreg /restore" and restore a registry backup that was created before the failed installation. Ben "john" wrote in message ups.com... 1. Use one of these methods in case the NOIDE flag has been set.
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=151911 http://support.microsoft.com/?id=188480 2. Boot into Safe Mode, go into Device Manager. Remove ALL drives, ALL drive controllers (except the "dual/single fifos" which can't be removed in Device Manager), and the System device called "PCI Bus". 3. Physically disconnect any USB device(s), then remove all USB-related devices in Device Manager. 4. Right-click the modem device, choose Properties, put in a check near the button to "Disable in this hardware profile." Click OK. Do the same for any other modem device (may have an "HCL enumerator" and/or sound devices that were part of the modem installation.) 5. Look carefully for any devices which you know used to be installed but which have since been uninstalled and Remove them. 6. Restart into Normal Mode and allow Windows to reinstall the devices. More than one restart will be necessary. 7. If Device Manager in Normal mode now shows everything to be hunky-dory and everything works, try re-enabling the modem device(s) by unchecking the "Disable in this hardware profile" check box(s). Restart and see what happens. 8. If everything is still OK, finish by reconnecting external USB hardware, one by one. 9. Report back with the results, *please*. I've tried to keep this to a minimum, but more drastic procedures may be called for. -- Gary S. Terhune MS MVP Shell/User "john" wrote in message ups.com...
