Default Avast not ME friendly?

Still on good old ME, looking for free replacement for AVG 7
antivirus due to go out of support any time. Very few alternatives, Avast
seems like good bet, but seems to me I read in this NG a little while ago
that ME and Avast Free do not get along. True? If so, any other
alternatives besides ClamWin?

I haven't found that at all. Admittedly our ME compact is not used too
often, however I just returned from a 2 week vacation using it daily,
including Avast updates without any problems.

Avast and Me get on fine other than that I seem to recall it inhibits the
creation of automatic system restore checkpoints. Not a problem if you
instead remember to make your own manual checkpoints every so often.

That would be an alternative, but Mike already answered 'not true' with
different words.

Also, of course, as has been noted so many times - if Larry the Lamb means
it literally, well, you can't upgrade from Me to 2K. If he means it
ironically it just brings to mind another - who recommends Linux to Win Me
users though he used to use 2K himself. One is a home system, the other is a
business system. 2K is not free so why would Win Me users want to shell out
for a different operating system that merely looks reminiscent of Me but has
just about none of the features that make Me different from 98? This would
be one of those idiots who derogates System Restore for users they
presumably think are too thick to be able to run Windows for any length of
time without screwing it up.

This is just one more comment from some drive-by trollster who thinks he's
smart but isn't smart enough to 'get' humility. I daresay he's one of the
legion now propagating what is effectively the urban legend of Me vying for
title of 'Microsoft's worst operating system ever' or words to that effect.
Another sheep in wolf's clothing.

Thanks for the insight. H.
