Default Win 98SE Machine will not start windows

I have a win98SE Machine that been working fine. I needed to do the annual
cleanup, so I opened the machine up [which I've done many times before,
without any issues]. However, after I put everthing back together, I wanted
the start the unit, so I pressed the power button, all I get is the CD / DVD
drives light, and the floppy light, and I hear a loud power transformer hum.
But nothing else happens. Nothing comes up on the monitor, and I have to hard
power the unit down! I triple checked the connections and I just cannot
figure this out.
Can you please help?

JHB:

I think you should reduce the system to the bare minimum and try
booting from a floppy. Take out everything except the memory, floppy
drive and video card and see what happens.

Does the system use an AT style power supply?? If so be sure you have
the two motherboard connectors positioned correctly!!! The BLACK wires
on each motherboard connector should be towards the middle of the
motherboard's connector.

Thanks John, I did that, and it looks like one of my memory modules is bad.
Main thing, is the machine is back up and running, just with a little less
memory, which I can add later on. Thanks for the help.

JHB:

Glad to hear you got it working and thanks for letting us know.

Might be worth running the suspect memory module through a RAM checker
like MemTest86 just to be sure it was not just poor contact. OTOH it
could have been zapped by static (more of a problem in winter with dry
heated air) during the cleaning process.
