hard drive refuses to boot
Hi
While using software d/loaded to my Maxtor 20 gb HD for the first time , my system crashed and I had to reboot. Now after the windows 98 flash screen comes on the system just hangs. I immediately removed the drive and booted up with another freshly reformatted drive running win 98 se. I am afraid to tinker with it before being fully apprised of the possible danger involved for fair of loosing my data. Questions: 1) If I have been hit by a virus which has affected the boot sector etc. What procedure should I follow to remove it? 2) Will attaching the affected drive to my system as a secondary master drive to view if my files are still there harm it in any way 3) I have heard it is better to copy the entire affected drive to a larger hd and work on the copy instead. How is this done. The newly installed and formatted drive is a Maxtor 80Gb. Paul |

hard drive refuses to boot
1. Unlikely if you are using an up to date anti virus program.
2. No 3. This is only required when there is a strong suspicion that the hard drive is failing. There is no such indication of that from what you described. What do you want to do? If you want to just transfer files to the new drive and clean off the 20 gb drive, then mount it and start transferring files. If you want to continue using the 20 gb drive as your primary system, post back for guidance. One thing to do is hit the Esc key and get rid of the splash screen so you can see what is going on. -- Regards Ron Badour, MS MVP for W98 Tips: http://home.satx.rr.com/badour Knowledge Base Info: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?pr=kbinfo "pablo" pabvs@ yahoo.com wrote in message ... You guys are the best. I connected the drive as
a secondary master and was able to transfer my data safely. I was a bit apprehensive having trashed my data on 2 previous occasions Thanks Paul "Ron Badour" wrote in message ... 1. hard drive refuses to boot
That method is tried and true--I use it to transfer data for every new
computer I set up. Thanks for the feedback. -- Regards Ron Badour, MS MVP for W98 Tips: http://home.satx.rr.com/badour Knowledge Base Info: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?pr=kbinfo "Pablo" wrote in message ...
