Default Upgrading to XP from 'me' system recovery disk

We have ana ancient packard bell system with 'me' pre-installed. We have
recovery disks only, for the system.
Basically, I am looking to upgrade (as a student) to an academic license
FULL version of XP? If i was to purchase the academic student version upgrade
for XP would it logisticaly and legally work with my current software?
Pleeeese help,

A question much better asked in a NG supporting XP however you can use an
upgrade version to XP to upgrade your current Win Me system to either XP
Home or XP Pro depending on the version of the upgrade disk. What you
will be unable to do, since you only have a Win Me recovery disk, is to
"clean install" XP (rather than upgrade) using an upgrade disk since to do
this you have to be able to insert "qualifying media" (such as a Win Me
CD) during the clean install to confirm your right to be using an upgrade
CD.
