Default Disk space available error

My computer shows that my 4Gb hard drive is 99% full. I
have deleted internet files, cookies, temp files, some
large programs and emptied the recycle bin. I also ran
Norton Systemworks defrag (system optimization), clean
sweep and disk doctor. And also have run scan disk and
no errors came up. Is this more likely to be a hardware
problem or a software problem. Also is there anything
else I should try to be doing. Thanks.

If you have the Norton protected bin (or whatever it is called) installed,
all the files you deleted are probably still in it. I am NOT a fan of
Norton and that would have been the first thing I dumped.

I agree with Ron, empty Norton Protected Files from the Recycled Bin.
I use NSW also , but I don't let Norton protect the Recycled Bin.

I checked the computer. I right clicked the recycle bin
and went to properties, and the Norton Protection tab.
The protection enable box was not checked. Also right
clicking on the recycle bin the empty norton protected
files is not selectable. I tried deleting a couple more
programs and the memory is still not changing. Is there
anything else I can try? Thanks.

I have been deleting more and more things off of my
computer and the available space is decreasing. It
started around 469 Mb left and now it's around 401Mb. My
scan disks aren't coming up with any errors. Any ideas
why this would happen? Thanks.

After deleting some files from the root directory, things
that looked like file... with a whole bunch of numbers
afterwards, about 30 Gb were shown to be free. So I hope
this has fixed my problem, but I'm curious to know why
the files would take up so much space. Ron and Eric,
thanks for your help.

This should have said 40 Gb not 4.
